A late-season surge by South Vermillion wasn’t quite enough to halt a high school softball sectional winning streak by the host team Thursday night, as Edgewood got on top early and held on for a 5-2 win in the championship game of the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.
The loss was just the second in the last 12 games for the Wildcats. The Mustangs, however, haven’t lost a sectional softball game for eight years in a row.
Mustang dominance may have been on the minds of the Wildcats early, as some shaky play spotted the home team a 3-0 lead in the first inning and a half.
But Daphne Dunegan of the Wildcats, whose personal late-season pitching surge was coincidental with her team’s, settled down and kept Edgewood from pulling away. The South Vermillion offense, however, couldn’t quite take advantage.
“We just didn’t get the big hit,” said coach Mick Hammett of the Mustangs. “The first couple of innings we had runners on base but we’d strike out ... we didn’t get the big hit to break it open.”
After two walks, an infield out and a bloop single gave Edgewood a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, a dropped third strike enabled the Mustangs to load the bases.
Despite that error, and despite a popup that fell untouched in foul territory to prolong the inning, Dunegan escaped with no further damage thanks to back-to-back strikeouts.
South Vermillion went down in order in the bottom of the first, however, and the Mustangs took advantage of a leadoff double by Caitlyn Pursell to get two more runs in the second inning. Leadoff batter Rachel Delay, who scored the first-inning run, got an RBI when a throw to the plate was late on her fielder’s choice grounder, and she scored the second run of the inning on a single by Amanda Gilliland.
A walk to Dunegan and a double by Natalie Draper had Wildcat runners at second and third to start the bottom of the inning, but South Vermillion got just one run on a ground out by Morgan Willhite.
Then Dunegan began frustrating the Mustangs regularly. She pitched around a walk and a hit in the third, overcame two more Edgewood hits in the fourth and survived a two-hit fifth inning when shortstop Bailey Mack turned a line drive into an unassisted double play.
“I’m really proud of her,” South Vermillion coach Mike Andrew said of Dunegan. “She got off to a really slow start this season, but after midway through the season she’s been our best pitcher.”
If the Mustangs were frustrated offensively, however, the Wildcats were just as much so. They put two runners on in the bottom of the third, only to have both of them thrown out on the bases by Gilliland, the Mustang catcher (”She had a good game behind the plate and at the plate,” Hammett said); they left two runners on in the fourth after hits by Lauren Hixon and Bostyn Cox; and, with Mack’s defensive play threatening to give them momentum, went down one-two-three in the fifth.
Edgewood then opened some daylight in the top of the sixth. A sliced pop fly down the left-field line by Caycee Thomas went for a leadoff triple when the ball bounced past a diving outfielder, a collision on a popup led to an error and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Two grounders were hit where the pulled-in infield couldn’t make a throw home, and the score was 5-1.
South Vermillion got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Dunegan hit a two-out double, Draper beat out an infield hit and Dunegan scored on an overthrow, and Willhite had a leadoff single in the seventh that didn’t produce a miracle rally.
“The last two weeks we played really hard,” Andrew said after the game. “We started [the season] slow, but we really came on.
“[Thursday] we just couldn’t get on top of the batters,” he continued. “We got behind, and it’s tough to come back when [the Mustangs] have the bases loaded every inning. But [the Wildcats] tried. There’s no quit in any of them.
“I’m going to miss our three seniors [Willhite, Draper -- who had a spectacular tumbling catch in center field -- and Morgan Samuelson],” Andrew said, but added a note of optimism. “We started four freshmen [Hixon, Cox, second baseman Taylor Andrew -- the coach’s daughter -- and right fielder Karlie Crouch].”
