TERRE HAUTE —
The boys sectional track meet came down to Tyler Seibert of Terre Haute South and Cole Seward of Terre Haute North in the final event again Thursday evening at Terre Haute North.
But unlike last week’s dual meet at South, when Seibert held off Seward in a physical battle down the homestretch of the last leg of the 1,600-meter relay, the Braves’ relay team was able to hold off the Patriots by several yards.
And more importantly from a North standpoint, it didn’t matter all that much. Thursday’s sectional trophy went to the Patriots, who had enough cushion going into the relay that they needed just to finish fourth or higher if Seibert and the Braves won the race.
Of course, considering the Patriots had a disqualification on the final relay a year ago that cost them a championship, coach Craig Gillaspy was still a little nervous.
“This is a lot better than last year,” he said when the tally — North 148.5, South 145 — was official. “We knew it would be a tight meet.”
“That was about how we had it scored out,” coach Mark Raetz of the Braves agreed.
“The kids competed hard. We knew it would come down to the end, and we gave ourselves a chance. We were just on the short end this time.”
North had more regional qualifiers than the Braves, but South won more events — two each by Seibert (long jump and 400) and Jackson Bertoli (1,600 and 3,200) and one each by Nick Jaeger (high jump) and Nic Keller (discus).
Twice the Patriots got first-and-third combinations — Seward and Cameron Stewart in intermediate hurdles, Connor Curley and Willie Lower in pole vault — and the Patriots finished ahead of the Braves in the other two relays.
The difference may have come down to a photo finish in high hurdles — Seward finished 0.01 of a second ahead of Riley Witvoet of Sullivan, with South’s Jeremy Patterson just 0.14 of a second out of first — and by the performance of two unheralded Patriots, Kevin Moore and Peter Davis.
With sprinter Dakota Schefke sidelined by injury, Moore stepped in to get second- and fourth-place finishes in the sprints for the Patriots, in addition to his usual anchor job on the 400-meter relay.
Davis, anchor leg on a second-place 3,200-meter relay team, also had a new job, and got six key points with a third-place finish in the 3,200-meter run.
“I have not run the 3,200 since eighth grade,” Davis said afterward. “My primary goal — my sole goal — was third place … I stayed with [Greencastle’s] Ryan Stevens, and then I made a move with 600 [meters] to go.”
Seward, who also had a spot on the 3,200 relay to give him two firsts and two seconds for the meet, admitted he was uncertain as he crossed the finish line in high hurdles.
“I was thinking the whole time about what was going to happen,” he recalled after the meet. “I had Sullivan [Witvoet] on my right, and Jeremy [Patterson], who got me last week.”
There was a little less pressure by the time Seward ran for the last time.
“I just wanted to do what I can to get us a win,” he said after the 1,600 relay. “Tyler’s a great athlete. It’s hard to stay with him.”
Seward had hardly finished his last race when he was hoisted in the air by Patriot thrower Lee Davis, who added a pair of second-place finishes to his team’s point total.
“It was exciting,” Lee Davis said. “I heard them say Terre Haute South in second place, and I jumped over the fence and grabbed Cole. Sometimes people take [track] as an individual sport, but it’s really about that team; that’s what makes it exciting.”
“I thought the team did great tonight,” Seibert said after the meet. “We didn’t get the win we wanted, but there were a lot of personal bests.”
Seibert had one of those, winning the 400 in 49.99 seconds. “My goal all year was to break 50 [seconds],” he said. “It feels great to know I prepared right.”
Jaeger, who had given the Braves an early lead with his 6-foot-8 high jump, feels he has at least two more inches to attain the next few weeks to continue a pattern.
“I wanted to get 6-9 [Thursday night], but I want to get 6-10 by the end of this year,” he said. “Add four inches every year, like I have since eighth grade [6-6 last year, 6-2 as a sophomore, 5-10 as a freshman].
“I wanted to make sure I beat everybody [Thursday] to get the most points for South,” Jaeger added. “I thought this year was shot [after a serious ankle injury during basketball season] … but [the success] is because of all the skateboarding I did back in middle school.”
This year’s sectional realignment, bringing the Putnam County schools to the field in place of some of the Greene Country entrants, added a little extra spice to the proceedings made the fight for third place behind the Patriots and Braves an interesting one.
Nine other teams had regional qualifiers, with other winners being Tyler Shorter of North Putnam in the 100, Jacob Creasey of West Vigo in the 200, Joseph Rumley of Cloverdale in the 800 (maybe the meet’s best event) and Ryan Chestnut of South Putnam in shot put. Northview won the 3,200 relay with a team of Ian Heffner, Devon Cooksey, Damon Hyatt and Nic Yocom.
