Prep/metro roundup: Billy Newton’s 31 lead Lakers past Eels


Billy Newton had 23 of his game-high 31 points in leading visiting Shakamak to a 40-18 halftime lead Saturday night, and the Lakers remained unbeaten in Tri-River Conference play with a 76-50 win over Clay City.

Newton added eight rebounds and five steals to his point total, while Jarred VanHorn had 12 points and eight rebounds and John Smith had a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists — plus five more steals — for Class A’s eighth-ranked team.

A.J. Evans scored 16 points and Tyler Bridgewater 13 for the Eels, who have lost 12 in a row.

Women’s basketball

• Craft shines — At Park Hills, Mo., Terre Haute South graduate Megan Craft had 17 points and 13 assists Saturday in helping 25th-ranked Vincennes University to an 82-72 win at Mineral Area.

The Trailblazers play today against 2009 national runner-up Jefferson College at Hillsboro, Mo., and have a 6:30 p.m. game Wednesday at Lincoln Trail.

• Smith gets first, second — At Greencastle, Terre Haute North graduate and Indiana State recruit Shaun Smith led a 1-2-3 sweep for Vincennes University in the 55-meter dash and was runner-up in the 200-meter dash at the Tiger Invitational.



Tennis

• Bilyeu gets doubles win — At Griffith, Terre Haute South graduate Katie Bilyeu teamed with Stephanie York for a doubles win Sunday at Matchpoint Tennis Club, but Valparaiso lost its spring home opener 5-2 to Bradley.

Bilyeu lost in singles for the Crusaders, now 0-2. Valparaiso begins its spring trip March 9.
