ZIONSVILLE — Terre Haute South junior Cristina Elliott bested the state cutoff time of 58.39 seconds with her time of 57.87 seconds to win the 100 butterfly event in the IHSAA Girls Swimming Sectional preliminaries on Thursday.
Elliott will have to win the event or do the same time or better in today’s finals to advance to the state finals, but coach Jeff Thompson noted Friday that Elliott’s Thursday time was not even her season best and that she’s bettered the cutoff time several times during the season.
Elliott also had the second-best qualifying time in 200 individual medley (2:12.36). Also seeded second for South are Grace Padget in the 100 backstroke (1:03.27) and Mercedez Bray in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.57). South’s 200 medley relay unit is seeded first.
The top six place finishers in each event advanced to the sectional championship finals, from which the winner is an automatic state qualifier. The next six advanced to today’s consolation finals, with the next two being alternates.
Today’s sectional finals start times have been moved back two hours to 11 a.m. for diving and 3 p.m. for the swim finals due to the inclement weather.
