West Vigo boys win invite for third straight time

JASONVILLE — Andrew Kump and Nathan Kump, both seniors, finished 1-2 individually to lead their West Vigo team to a third straight championship in the Shakamak Cross Country Invite on a cool, overcast Saturday morning.

The Vikings’ boys team all placed in the top 16 to record 40 points, trailed by Eastern Greene (59) and Clay City (70). Blake Benefiel completed a solid day for the Vikings boys, winning the JV individual title.

On the girls side, Shakamak junior Savannah Turner was the individual winner with her time of 20 minutes, 37 seconds.

Eastern Greene was the girls team winner, all its runners placing in the top nine positions for a score of 32 points. Shakamak (66) was second, while West Vigo (74) placed a strong third overall.

“It was perfect. Good weather. Good course,” Andrew Kump stated, winning the individual title for the second year in a row by completing the twisting, turning course in a time of 16:32.

“I was trying to stay consistent and it didn’t really happen. I’m still training through all this, so I’m just getting ready for the [Western Indiana Confernce meet] and the state series.”

Nathan Kump finished 19 seconds behind his brother, with his time of 16:51.

“My plan was to go out fast and try to break away from the field, but I wasn’t feeling good at the beginning,” Nathan Kump said. “I didn’t have as big a lead as I’d like to have with about 200 meters left. But I was feeling pretty good by then and finished strong.”

Dillon Resler (16:58) and Brody Martin (17:12) of Eastern Greene were third and fourth, respectively. Clay City’s Jake Tiefel (17:13) was fifth, North Central’s Dean Danner sixth (17:27), while the host Lakers were paced by the ninth-place effort of Luke Sweet (17:43).

Andrew Kump is pleased with his Vikings’ team effort, as evidenced by the strong performances turned in by Kaleb Blair (sixth), Jonah Eckert (15th) and Austin Romanelly (16th).

“All the training we did together this summer helped,” Andrew Kump noted. “We’ve worked really hard this summer, working together, trying to get everybody closer together. It’s starting to pay off.”

As for his personal goals, Andrew Kump added, “ Win [WIC], get into state. Hopefully get all-state, top 25.”

Nathan Kump’s personal goals?

“Hoping to break into the 15’s [minutes] sometime this season, hopefully by the end of the year.”

Turner won on her home course by a margin of 12 seconds over Eastern Greene’s Hannah Resler (20:49). West Vigo’s Sarah Hudson was an early leader, but settled for third place (21:19).

“I’ve actually had a very good season this year, I don’t think at this point I could be happier,” Turner stated. “I just can’t wait for next year.”

While most athletes give predictable answers when queried about their goals, Turner was refreshingly honest with her personal assessment.

“It’s kind of up in the air. I’d love to win [Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference], but I’ll have to see what the other girls bring. It will be a tough race. It would be great to make it out of regional, but I’m not sure that I’m capable. I’m just going to pull myself in the top 15 and hope for dear life I can stay there,” she laughed.

West Vigo girls coach Steve DeGroote was pleased with Hudson’s strong finish, but was equally pleased with his team.

“[Hudson’s] got a goal in mind, going after it and doing super,” DeGroote said. She’s doing well. I had one girl who didn’t have one of her better times, I don’t think she was feeling good. But as a team, our times were excellent. Much improved and that’s all you can ask for.

“They’ve all picked it up. For only six kids, they’ve stayed with it. We finished third here and I thought wow! Shakamak and Eastern Greene, there were some outstanding times here. I’m happy.”
