CLAY CITY —
Clay City stood up to the pressure and to the Shakamak Lakers on Saturday night to win a third straight Class A sectional championship in the Eel Dome.
In the final two minutes of the first quarter and through the second, Clay City (18-6) went on a 19-4 run to take a 27-10 halftime lead over the Lakers.
“It’s pretty awesome. We knew we were going to get it done. We came out here, executed our game plan and played hard. It’s the third time, it’s still awesome, but we’re looking the take each game [one] at a time,” Carmela Roeschlein said who netted nine points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
For seniors Roeschlein, Brielle Drelick, Abby Reed and Allie Miller this will be their third trip to the Class A regional at Southwestern Shelby.
“It’s so exciting and all these people came out [to support us]. It just gets better every year,” Allie Miller said.
Drelick, who has been Clay City’s homecoming queen and last spring was prom queen, led the Eels with 15 points and four steals.
“I am so blessed. I love this school,” Drelick said.
Miller scored 10 points, hitting two 3-pointers against Shakamak’s zone defense.
“We were two-time defending champions and we were favored to win it, but we’re on our home floor and all these seniors know its our last time on our home floor, so we were ready to go,” Miller said before cutting down the net.
Coach Chris Ames addressed the Eels about the pressure after the win on Friday.
“There was some pressure and I thought our girls [Friday night] didn’t play to win so much. But I thought from the [opening] tip tonight they played to win,” Ames said.
It is the third year in a row Shakamak’s season has been ended by Clay City.
“The third year in a row, but it’s the third year in a row we’ve lost to a quality team,” Shakamak coach Troy Fougerousse said.
Jade Gambill led Shakamak with 13 points, as Clay City wrapped a 2-3 zone defense around the 6-foot center Kelsey Pilant, who scored three points.
“I told the girls I thought we were good enough defensively. Offensively we just could buy a bucket. The third quarter when we went to the 1-3-1 zone defense we got a few turnovers, but we couldn’t get any momentum going by knocking a bucket down,” Fougerousse said.
The Eels would like to end their season in Terre Haute, where the IHSAA State Finals will be held.
“We kind of thought it’s our destiny. Our senior year and [the state finals] are in Terre Haute. It would be awesome to be there with our [whole community]. Fan support would be crazy. We’re trying to get there,” Roeschlein said.
