You’ll have to forgive West Vigo for celebrating just a wee bit prior to the postgame handshake with South Vermillion, but its first victory in a sectional game in 11 years was worthy of celebrating.
West Vigo led from start to finish, but its decisive 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter finally sealed the deal, defeating South Vermillion 47-37 in the opening game of the Class 3A Owen Valley girls basketball sectional on Tuesday.
The Vikings only sectional championship since the class system was instituted occurred in 2000. Since then it’s been one-and-done, until Tuesday.
“We made a little breakthrough,” West Vigo coach Ryan Easton stated. “It was the young kids that stepped up, and I thought some of our seniors played with some composure there at the end.”
You can throw in a happy moment for the Vikings by avenging a double-digit loss at home earlier this season to boot. South Vermillion won their earlier meeting 58-47 on Dec. 2, 2011, inside the Green Dome.
“It’s always nice to avenge a loss anytime, that’s for sure,” Easton added.
Vikings’ senior guard Brooklyn Waters’ recognition of being a focal point of SV’s defense enabled two of her teammates, senior Mikaela Silcock (14 points) and freshman Baylee Waters (10 points), to lead the Vikings in scoring.
“I tell you, Mikaela played a heckuva game,” Easton said. “She’s a sneaky player. You’re not going to see her on many scouting reports as far as a stud. But she has that capability of stepping up and doing something like that.
“Tonight was the right night to do it, that’s for sure. The other three seniors get a lot of notoriety, but tonight it was Mikaela Silcock.”
Brooklyn Waters also turned in a solid stat line of eight points, seven rebounds and two steals. Erin Barton led all rebounders with 11, while Silcock had seven boards.
West Vigo led just 10-9 after the first quarter, SV’s Morgan Samuelson and Jessie Lubovich hitting back-to-back 3’s to slice into West Vigo’s early 8-3 lead.
But as the Wildcats opened the second quarter missing their first 14 shots, the Vikings’ Baylee Waters scored six of their points in an 8-0 run to go up 18-9.
“We couldn’t throw it into the ocean, but we were still hanging in there,” SV coach Tim Terry said. “So that was a credit to our girls fighting hard.”
The Vikes led by eight points at intermission, but still held a precarious 32-27 early in the fourth quarter.
Soon after, SV’s “hanging in there” came to a screeching halt as the Vikings scored on their next five possessions — a drive by Silcock, an inside hoop by Shelby Byrley, a jumper by Charity Lane, a drive by Baylee Waters and a 3-pointer by Lane — for a 43-27 lead midway in the fourth quarter.
Bailey Mack hit back-to-back 3’s, but the Wildcats would get no closer than 10 points, the final margin of victory.
“We were like a step behind,” Terry said. “A couple [players] have been sick and I knew it would make a difference. But they played as hard as they could. They all did. West Vigo played really hard, so you got to give them credit.
“I was proud of the girls winning nine games this year. So they need to be proud of that too. It’s a good group.”
Samuelson and Mack paced South Vermillion (9-13) with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
West Vigo (6-15) will enjoy this sectional win, but its focus will soon return to the next game, a semifinal matchup with Brown County on Friday.
“It’s a good win, but there’s a lot of basketball season left … that’s for sure,” Easton concluded.
In the nightcap, Greencastle defeated Owen Valley 48-42. The Tiger Cubs will face Edgewood in the other semifinal game on Friday.

New route leads to same place for South girls tennis

This year, their trip was re-routed through Greencastle (regional) and Center Grove (semistate). So it cnahged to east and more east. -

South Vermillion softball's late-season surge comes to end
