CLINTON —
Under regular-season circumstances, Sullivan High School boys basketball coach Jeff Moore would not be pleased if his team allowed its opponent to make 23 shots from 3-point range.
Even in a victory.
But in an all-star game featuring soon-to-be graduating seniors, Moore will take the win with a smile.
At least that’s what he did after his South All-Stars held off the North All-Stars 91-89 as part of the third annual “FS the Magazine All-Star Saturday” — despite a 23-point effort from the North squad’s Phillip Harpenau, who was playing in his own South Vermillion gym.
The North squad connected on 23 treys, including five from Harpenau (four in the fourth quarter) and four apiece from Rockville’s Cody Jeffries (who finished with 16 points), Terre Haute North’s Ross Sponsler (14 points) and West Vigo’s Cody Thornton (12 points).
The triumphant South team got 17 points from Terre Haute South’s Jermaine Smith — who fired in 13 in the fourth period — along with 12 and 11 points respectively from the Clay City duo of Ben Denker and Brylan Jones. Sullivan’s Rhett Smith, an Indiana State recruit, contributed seven points.
“I had a lot of fun,” Moore told the Tribune-Star afterward. “I had a great group of kids to work with. We kinda shared minutes. Everybody played equal minutes and that’s what it’s all about.”
“It was really enjoyable to coach,” said West Vigo boys coach Joe Boehler, who guided the North All-Stars on Saturday. “There were a lot of great players out here. All these kids have represented the Wabash Valley for four years now and done a tremendous job. I’ve coached against so many of them and I know the scouting report on so many of them that it was nice to actually get to sit down and talk to them a little bit … and actually root for them for a change instead of rooting against them.”
The North squad actually led 33-22 midway through the second quarter, then the South team rattled off 19 unanswered points to move ahead 41-33. The South built an 80-67 advantage early in the fourth frame, but a furious North rally keyed by Harpenau and Jeffries fell just short at the end.
In the girls game played Saturday evening, another Clay City duo — Carmela Roeschlein (16 points) and Brielle Drelick (12 points) — paced the South squad to a convincing 64-40 victory over the North group. Also representing Clay City was South All-Stars coach Chris Ames.
“It was really fun not only to coach those two [Roeschlein and Drelick] again and see what they can do … but it was a lot of fun to see a lot of good athletes on both teams play one last time,” Ames mentioned. “They put on a good show, I thought.”
West Vigo’s Brooklyn Waters led the North squad with 17 points. Terre Haute South’s Hannah Lee also provided double-figure scoring for the South team with 11.
Harpenau and Roeschlein — both with no plans to continue their basketball careers in college — were named Most Valuable Player of their respective games.
“This was awesome,” said Harpenau, who will major in nursing at ISU. “This brought back a lot of memories [from years ago when he played on the same travel teams with Jermaine Smith, Thornton and West Vigo’s Jordan Houser]. It was a blast.”
“My favorite thing to do in high school was play with Bri [Drelick] on our basketball team,” emphasized Roeschlein, who will major in psychiatry at Indiana University. “So to be able to come out and do it again, it was a great time.”
“It was definitely a lot of fun,” added Drelick, who also plans to attend Indiana in the fall. “We’ve been playing together all our lives. It never gets old. We’re definitely going to play club ball next year at IU. The kind of players that her and I are, we’re never going to stop playing pick-up games … but this was definitely a lot of fun.”
All-Star notes — North Central’s Aaron Bellgraph defeated Sullivan’s Rhett Smith and South Vermillion’s Harpenau in an entertaining slam-dunk contest, which took place between games.
Bellgraph’s final dunk, which earned perfect 10s from all three judges, involved him leaping high with his legs splitting over a friend standing with his back turned in front of the basket.
Meanwhile, Harpenau was not upset about his third-place showing.
“They needed an extra guy,” Harpenau explained with a chuckle. “I can dunk, but not good. I thought I’d go out there and give it a shot.”
• Sullivan’s Kaleb Pirtle scored a 17 to defeat Harpenau (10) and Marshall’s Jacob Duncan (8) in the boys 3-point shooting contest. In the girls 3-point finals, Roeschlein posted a 12 to knocked off Riverton Parke’s Elizabeth Dickey (7) and Marshall’s Erika Kuhn (5).
