In the estimation of Terre Haute North coach Chris Barrett, defense has been his team’s strong point all season long.
That was evident in Friday night’s 16-7 win at North Central.
The Panthers lost five of eight fumbles and threw three interceptions. And even though the Patriots (5-4, 4-3 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) didn’t take full advantage, they did enough to win.
“Offensively we did get better tonight,” Barrett said. “We actually made more plays offensively tonight than we had in a long time, so we did get some things going. We just weren’t able to finish some drives. That was really the downer there.”
The Patriots opened the game with a 20-play drive that took 7:27 off the clock, capped by a 1-yard TD run by Kai Stratten. Helping keep that drive alive were two fourth-down personal fouls against the Panthers (2-7, 2-5).
One of those fouls came when Zach Potter was roughed up on a bad snap on a punt. The Patriots had several problems with punt snaps.
“We had a new long snapper. He settled down in the second half,” Barrett said.
North Central began its first drive at the Patriots’ 40 thanks to a personal foul against North. But Michael Loggan lost the ball on a sack.
The Patriots lost the ball on another bad punt snap, and the Panthers took advantage with a 6-yard scoring run by Milton McClain to tie the game at 7-7.
“First half we had too many missed tackles. We were playing hard, we talked about things at halftime, they really stepped up,” Barrett said.
The score stayed tied into the third quarter, when yet another lost North Central fumble led to a 35-yard Potter field goal.
Even with the turnovers, the Panthers were still within striking distance. But Loggan lost the ball at his own 15 — the fifth lost fumble for North Central — and Calvin Blank scooped it up for the clinching touchdown.
Barrett acknowledged that his team’s offense had some problems to address.
“We missed some open receivers, we really have to get that dialed in,” he said.

But the Patriots’ running game got going, tallying 144 yards. Ricky Brookins just missed a 100-yard game, finishing with 97 yards on 15 carries.

Kehrt Award goes to Emily Bell, Lee Davis
Emily Bell of Terre Haute South and Lee Davis of Terre Haute North are the 2013 recipients of the Willard M. Kehrt Mental Attitude Award.
Bell and Davis were nominated by their schools and chosen in a vote by the Kehrt Award panel. Both will be recognized at awards assemblies later in the month at the schools.
Bell played varsity basketball four years at South and is competing in track this season, running the 800 and two relays. “I wanted something to do my senior year,” Bell said.
She plans to attend DePauw University and play basketball. DePauw is the reigning NCAA Division III champ in women's basketball.
Bell tore an AÇL playing in a basketball tournament the summer after her sophomore season. She missed most of her junior season but came back to play her senior year and was second leading scorer and leading rebounder her final season.
Bell also was leading rebounder her sophomore year. -
South softball's power display earns Braves share of MIC
The fun that the Terre Haute South high school softball team had Saturday — including those five home runs — was all the result of the hard work the Braves had put in before the game, coach Dwayne Stout said after the game.
