TERRE HAUTE —
Neither of them has gotten all the recognition they deserve for their respective contributions to their girls high school basketball teams over the past few years, and maybe part of the reason for that is that neither of them worries about recognition very much.
But when Morgan Seeley of Terre Haute North and Hannah Lee of Terre Haute South lead the Patriots and Braves onto the Hulman Center court for the last time tonight, they’ll both be looking for a team victory to cap their prep careers.
“This would top it off,” Seeley agreed earlier this week when thinking about tonight, “to win the North-South game and keep the crowd on our side. Everybody will be there for the boys game [which follows after the 6:30 p.m. girls contest].”
“[The North-South game] is a really big part of our season,” said Lee, “and it’s never like any other regular-season game. We’ve learned that the easy way and the hard way.”
The hard way Lee was talking about was probably last season’s game in Hulman Center, when the favored Braves lost 37-32 after winning 14 of their first 18 games. The Braves did win three times against the Patriots a year earlier, when Lee and Seeley were sophomores (and when Seeley missed the Hulman Center game with a knee injury), but those three wins were by a total of 11 points.
South has already beaten North this year, a 37-24 decision back on Nov. 12 in the championship game of the Terre Haute Savings Bank Tip-off Tournament.
Since then the Patriots have a slightly better record than the Braves, including a pair of Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference wins, but obviously those records don’t affect tonight’s outcome.
“We don’t compare our games [with North’s],” Lee said pointedly this week. “We’re two different teams. What [the Patriots] do doesn’t affect what we do.”
“We’ve gotten better as a team [since playing South in November],” said Seeley. “We’ve worked on a lot of things — defense, pressuring the ball, shooting — and we’re in a lot better shape than we used to be [which could come in handy on a 94-foot court].”
Coaches of both Lee and Seeley are sorry they won’t be coaching the two seniors much longer.
“Morgan’s been a good leader for us,” said North’s Mike Allen this week, “and she’s developed herself into a good point guard.
“She’s a hard worker and very dedicated to our program,” the coach continued. “She’s still a diamond in the rough … she’s still improving.”
“I’ve gotten a lot better throughout the season,” Seeley agreed. “I’ve learned when to shoot more and when to take the ball to the basket.”
“Hannah has come a long way since last year,” said coach Cara Stuckey of the Braves. “She’s worked on her post moves … and she’s making more moves to the basket. We’re looking forward to seeing her be even more aggressive on the offensive end. It makes us better when she’s able to attack.”
The slender Lee is sometimes underappreciated because she’s not a typical post player. Some of her best work is done a little farther from the basket.
“She likes to be out there around 15 feet [from the goal],” Stuckey noted. “She’s a great passer from the high post … sometimes she’s too unselfish.”
“I’m kind of sad not being able to play with these girls [much longer],” said Lee. “Coach Stuckey is doing some great things, which makes me want this game even more.
“I’ve had a lot of fun and a lot of good experiences,” continued Lee, who said she wouldn’t change much about her high school career. “It’s built me as a player and as a person. Obviously I would like to have won more games, but as a player I’ve really grown a lot.”

New route leads to same place for South girls tennis
For so many years, the road to the IHSAA girls tennis state finals for local teams ran through Vincennes (regional) and Jasper (semistate). In other words, south and more south.
This year, their trip was re-routed through Greencastle (regional) and Center Grove (semistate). So it cnahged to east and more east. -

South Vermillion softball's late-season surge comes to end
