PREP ROUNDUP: Marshall plays Casey in LIC semifinals tonight

TERRE HAUTE — Semifinal games of the Little Illini Conference basketball tournaments will be played tonight.

At Red Hill, Flora (20-2) meets Hutsonville-Palelstine (16-5) in the first boys game at 6 p.m. CST with Casey (10-5) facing Marshall (14-5) in the second contest.

At Lawrenceville, Marshall (20-1) meets Red Hill in the first girls game at 6 p.m.

Both championship games will be played Friday at Red Hill. Consolation championship and third-place games will be played Thursday.

 

Girls basketball

• Shakamak 50, Union 35 — At Jasonville, Kelsey Pilant had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the host Lakers to a SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference win.

Jade Gambill added 12 points for Shakamak, while Hallie Smith had 16 and Cheyenne Goodman 11 for Union.

• Seeger 63, Turkey Run 21 — At West Lebanon, Hailey Cox had more than half her team’s points, scoring 12 for the Warriors in a Wabash River Conference makeup game.

Kelcey Swisher had 17 points for the Patriots, ranked 16th in Class 2A, while Kelsey Griswold, Christen Lord and Miranda Synesael had 10 each.

• Pairings set — Pairings and schedules are set for Class 1A and Class 2A Illinois high school girls basketball tournaments.

Teams begin regional play Feb. 6. Marshall is seeded No. 1 in the Class 2A regional at Teutopolis and Shiloh is seeded No. 1 in its own Class 1A regional. Shiloh also will be a host team for sectional action.

Feb. 7 — Shiloh (1) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m., followed by Tuscola (2) vs. Game 2 winner

Feb. 10 — Championship 7:30 p.m.

Winners from Shiloh and Martinsville will advance to the Shiloh Sectional

• New route leads to same place for South girls tennis

  For so many years, the road to the IHSAA girls tennis state finals for local teams ran through Vincennes (regional) and Jasper (semistate). In other words, south and more south.
  This year, their trip was re-routed through Greencastle (regional) and Center Grove (semistate). So it cnahged to east and more east.

  Robinson jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then cruised to a convincing 12-3 victory over Greenville in a IHSA Class 2A Vandalia sectional semifinal game on Thursday.
  Ashlyn Sullivan was 2 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs to lead the winning Maroons.

• South Vermillion softball's late-season surge comes to end

  A late-season surge by South Vermillion wasn’t quite enough to halt a high school softball sectional winning streak by the host team Thursday night, as Edgewood got on top early and held on for a 5-2 win in the championship game of the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.
  The loss was just the second in the last 12 games for the Wildcats. The Mustangs, however, haven’t lost a sectional softball game for eight years in a row.
