Northview moves down to Class 3A in IHSAA non-football tournaments

TERRE HAUTE — A hand full of Wabash Valley schools will see their classifications change for the IHSAA state tournament, starting with the 2013-14 seasons and continuing through 2014-15.

For that time frame, Northview will go from Class 4A to 3A in baseball, boys basketball, girls basketball, softball and volleyball.

“I think it’s awesome,” Northview athletic director Charley Jackson told the Tribune-Star. “I think it’s a golden opportunity for our kids. If this doesn’t motivate our athletes to get ready to play, I don’t know what would. … I noticed we’ll be the second-largest 3A school. We had been one of the smallest 4A schools. We could do a lot of good things with this.”

“I think it’ll obviously change our opponents,” Northview boys basketball coach Clint Weddle added. “The things that won’t change is what it takes for us to be successful … putting together a positive effort and enjoying the opportunity to play against any opponent that we might face. It should bring some new rivalries to the sectional. We’ll definitely look forward to that.”

Meanwhile, South Vermillion will drop from Class 3A to 2A in baseball, boys basketball, girls basketball, softball and volleyball. Riverton Parke will move up from Class A to Class 2A in the same five sports, while Bloomfield will become Class A in those sports after being Class 2A in recent years.

South Putnam was the only nearby school included in the football list released by the IHSAA on Tuesday, although the list does not include schools that moved up from Class 5A to the new 6A. Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South will remain in 5A.

The list revealed no changes in Wabash Valley boys and girls soccer.

Enrollment figures, the total of boys and girls in grades 9-12, were submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education last fall and are used to determine the classifications in the sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer, softball and volleyball.

Four schools that have joined the IHSAA membership in the last two years but are not yet eligible to compete in IHSAA tournaments were not included in the listing of schools. Anderson Preparatory Academy will be eligible beginning in 2015-16, while Christel House Academy, Hammond Academy of Science and Technology and South Bend Career Academy will be eligible in 2016-17.

Sectional groupings for each sport will be announced this spring following approval of the IHSAA Executive Committee.
