Huntingburg —
Linton bested Clarksville 65-62 in a game of runs to advance to Saturday’s championship game of the Southridge Class 2A Regional for boys high school basketball.
Perry Central defeated Switzerland County 60-46 in the first game to set up a Linton-Perry Central championship game.
The Generals had the first run of the day, scoring eight straight points to open the second stanza to take a 23-13 lead, but the Miners closed out the period with a 12-2 run and the game was tied 25-25 at halftime.
Linton began the second half the way it ended the first 16 minutes to open up a 32-25 lead and the Miners briefly trailed only one more time the rest of the way.
Andrew Jones hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game to give Clarksville a 38-37 lead, but Austin Karazsia responded with an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Miners back in front 41-38 and they fronted 43-38 going into the final period.
Linton scored the first six points of the fourth frame to take its biggest lead of the game (49-38) and the Miners still were up 59-50 in the final minute before the Generals rallied to cut the lead to 63-59 with 12.7 seconds left.
Karazsia hit two free throws to hike the Linton lead to 65-59 before Jones hit his ninth 3-pointer to make it 65-62 with 1.8 seconds to play. Clarksville had one last chance at a tie when Calvin McEwen stole the ball and got off a 3-pointer that was off mark.
“Clarksville is a good solid team … we’re pretty good too. Clarksville was doing its thing early until Austin started getting inside. Dess kept us in it early. Austin got going and we had some big plays from Bohnert,” said Linton coach Joey Hart.
“That was key for us to tie the game right before the half. We are a team of runs and when our defense can dictate, we are best. I could not be prouder of our guys,” he added.
“I am glad we will play 5 on 5 tonight. We won’t have to play the crowd,” he said.
Perry Central had the largest group of fans for the early session. Linton’s contingent was not far behind.
Fougerousse led the 22-3 Miners with 22 points and eight rebounds, going 11 of 13 at the free-throw line, and Karazsia had 21 points, nine boards and two steals, going 5 for 5 at the line. Bohnert was the other Miner in twin digits with 14 points and was 5 of 6 from the field.
Jones led the Generals with 29 points and eight rebounds and Aiden McEwen scored 13.
