PREP ROUNDUP: Swimming sectionals begin today

Three Vigo County schools will join eight other schools in the IHSAA girls swimming and diving sectional at Plainfield starting tonight and concluding on Saturday.

Teams competing include Terre Haute South, Terre Haute North, West Vigo, Avon, Cascade, Danville, Greencastle, North Putnam, Plainfield, South Putnam and Tri-West.

Swimming preliminaries are set for 5:30 p.m. tonight, while the diving, consolation and swim finals will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Favorites to win the team sectional title include Avon, Plainfield, and Danville. Avon and Plainfield are ranked 35th in the final IHSSCA state poll, with Danville ranked 39th.

South is unranked, but does have have two relays — 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay — ranked 21st and 22nd, respectively. Individually, Grace Padget is ranked 28th in the 100 backstroke.

South easily defeated Terre Haute North 137-49 on Jan. 12. South had four two-event winners in that meet, including Padget (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Sarah Senseman (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle), Katherine Senseman (50, 100 freestyle) and Mercedez Bray (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke).

North’s Carly Young and Kelsey Thomas are both ranked statewide as divers, 24th and 31st, respectively. Young was the Patriots’ only winner in the North-South match with 202.35 points.

First-place sectional winners and persons equaling or bettering the state time standard in the consolation finals or championship finals in each event qualify for the state meet.

The top four divers in the sectional advance to the diving regional, then the top eight in the regional advance to the state meet.

Meanwhile, North Vermillion, Rockville and South Vermillion will be competing in the Crawfordsville sectional. Those start times are 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The diving regional will be Feb. 7 at Brownsburg, with the state finals at the IU Natatorium on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis on Feb. 10-11.

Girls basketball

• South Vermillion 71, Turkey Run 33
— At Clinton, Bailey Mack had 17 points to lead South Vermillion to a win as Jessie Lubovich connected for 14 points and Kenzi Cheesewright and Morgan Samuelson added 13.

Shelby Crum led Turkey Run with 10 points.

— At Casey, Ill., Brandon Wolfe led the Warriors in scoring with 18 points in Tuesday’s game. Trivette Scales had 14 points and Drew Bolin tallied 13. Both players had eight rebounds.

• Cerro Gordo 81, Martinsville 72 — At Cerro Gordo, Ill., Blaine Washburn hit seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points for the Bluestreaks in Tuesday's Little Okaw Valley Conference contest.

Zach Mulkins scored 22 points and Kyle Perisho 13 for the Bluestreaks.

  • New route leads to same place for South girls tennis

    For so many years, the road to the IHSAA girls tennis state finals for local teams ran through Vincennes (regional) and Jasper (semistate). In other words, south and more south.
    This year, their trip was re-routed through Greencastle (regional) and Center Grove (semistate). So it cnahged to east and more east.

    Robinson jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then cruised to a convincing 12-3 victory over Greenville in a IHSA Class 2A Vandalia sectional semifinal game on Thursday.
    Ashlyn Sullivan was 2 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs to lead the winning Maroons.

    The loss was just the second in the last 12 games for the Wildcats. The Mustangs, however, haven’t lost a sectional softball game for eight years in a row.
