WEST TERRE HAUTE — Final scores were deceptive Thursday night as North Central and Owen Valley moved into the semifinals of the HI-99/Terre Haute Savings Bank Classic for girls high school basketball at West Vigo.
North Central scored the last five points of the first game to down Fountain Central 51-36, but the final tally wouldn’t have been that close had the Thunderbirds not missed nine of their first 10 fourth-quarter free throws.
And Owen Valley’s 52-29 win over the host Vikings disguises the fact that West Vigo was within eight points heading into the fourth quarter before the Patriots remembered they had three regulars back from last winter’s Class 3A state runner-up team.
Fountain Central’s loss set up a schedule change: because its football team is playing a Class A regional game tonight at Linton, its consolation-bracket game against West Vigo won’t be played until 1 p.m. Saturday.
That means the only game tonight is the other consolation-bracket contest between South Vermillion and Northview. The Wildcats and Knights meet at 7 p.m., not 6 as originally scheduled, but that may enable country music artists Emma Jacob and the Midwest Playboys to have a more extended show: they will perform after the game, a free HI-99 concert for those with tickets to the game.
Those with tickets Thursday may have left the gym most impressed with the improvement the host team has shown since last year.
A turnover machine in recent seasons against Owen Valley and its full-court pressure, the Vikings fell behind again early — as returning starters Kaitlin Sweatman and Sam Cooper asserted themselves for the Patriots — but showed no signs this time of folding.
Despite playing without their most experienced player — senior forward Marianne Umphries is ill — the Vikings battled the Patriots on even terms in just about everything but shooting percentage. And when Sweatman was whistled for her fourth foul early in the third quarter, West Vigo made a move.
Karen Beal had seven points and seven rebounds in that quarter, and assisted on Cassidy Carlson’s 3-pointer that cut a lead that had been 33-18 down to 35-27 at the third stop. But Cooper and Mack Evans, the Patriot sixth player the past two seasons, led their team on a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter and blow the game open.
“We battled back,” coach Ryan Easton of the Vikings said afterward, “but that’s the sign of a runner-up in the state championship game, to know how to break it open. That’s something we’re going to have to learn how to do.
“Despite the end, it was a step in the right direction,” Easton added. “It was a great effort — sloppy, but you expect that in a first game.”
“Coach Easton has done a fabulous job,” new coach Steve Goddard of the Patriots said. “That [West Vigo] team has improved by leaps and bounds … you can tell they put in a lot of time over the summer.”
Cooper had 15 points and, at 5-foot-2, a team-leading six rebounds for Owen Valley, while Sweatman had 12 points, five rebounds and even a game-high five assists.
The Patriots won’t press as often this year — “Our zone defense is our strength, and we’re going to have more speed than the other team most of the time,” Goddard said — but they struggled when they tried to against the Vikings.
“That’s the Brooklyn Waters factor,” Easton said of his sophomore point guard, who ran the show for her team and had five points, seven steals, four rebounds and three assists. Beal had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Carlson scored eight.
The first game had two ties and four lead changes in the first quarter, but an inside basket by Jocelyn Boyll — on her way to a game-high 20 points — but North Central ahead 12-10 at the first stop.
Boyll then hit two of four free throws to extend the lead, and Hannah Randolph launched a 3-pointer that opened some daylight. By the middle of the second quarter, the Thunderbirds were ahead 23-11 and coasting, and were on top 39-20 late in the third quarter after Randolph hit another 3-pointer.
Then the lid went on the basket as North Central shot free throws, enabling the Mustangs to creep within 46-36 in the latter stages of the game.
“It’s girls basketball,” said coach Gretchen Brown of North Central after the game. “They never let it be a nice, easy win.
“I think our legs gave out … in the fourth quarter we could have put it away.”
It was a second straight one-sided win for North Central.
“They’ve come out strong,” Brown said of her players. “This senior group has set goals for themselves, and they’re working hard to fulfill them.”
Boyll’s 20 points were complemented by Randolph, who added 16. Boyll also led in rebounding with seven, but Maria Drake and Ariel Hester had six each, Amber Kemp had five assists and three steals and Kate Brown had four thefts.
Kenzi Lindquist had 11 points and Lauren Krout eight points and seven rebounds for Fountain Central.
