CLARK COUNTY, Ill. — Civil war kicks off Saturday when east meets west.
Only one Clark County high school football team will advance to the Illinois Class 2A semifinals: the Marshall Lions or the Casey-Westfield Warriors.
“It’s a dream come true,” Laura Tingley said Monday inside Marshall Mutual Insurance on Archer Avenue. The business window facing the Clark County Courthouse contained well-wishes noting the pride in their “Mighty Marshall Lions.”
Tingley, a Marshall High School cheerleader in the class of 1974, said the chance for a rematch against cross-county rival Casey in the Class 2A quarterfinals makes it all the better. Both of her sons played for the Lions, one graduating in 1995 and the other in 2001, and she noted that her oldest boy held the school’s record for pass receptions until recently.
“Yes, I’m a big football fan,” she said, adding that she’ll be at the game at 1:30 p.m. (CST) in Casey on Saturday. “Sure, we’re going to win. I’d say by a field goal.”
Red and white were on display down the street at Courthouse Realty, where Realtor Bob Mauer said he has two grandsons on the team. One of them, Dalton Sanders, a senior defensive end, already has broken the school’s record for sacks this season. Mauer, himself a Lion from the class of 1954, played the same position 55 years ago.
“I hope to be” at the game, he said.
Marshall is the county seat for Clark with a population of about 3,700. The high school’s 2009 record is 10-1, with three shutouts this fall. But it was the Lions’ season-opening 28-7 loss against Casey that kept them from a perfect season record.
“Well, I think Casey will go all the way,” Diane Richards said inside her store, Petals and Perks, on Casey’s West Main Street. Casey boasts a population of about 3,000 souls, and everyone’s ready for the match. “The town really gets into it,” she said.
Driving into the town on U.S. 40, purple and gold signs line the grass, denoting the entrance to “Warrior Country.” Purple ribbons dangled from the street lamps up and down Illinois 49 as it turns into North Central Street.
Inside Bob’s General Store, Brenda Gendren said she’s saving thoughts on the outcome for Saturday night. “I hope so,” she said of a potential win. “You never like to make your boasts ’til the game’s over.”
Gendren’s nephew played on the undefeated 1985 Warriors team that won the Class 2A state championship. Several of Gendren’s cousins’ children are playing on this team, she said. “Mine have already been there and done that,” she laughed, adding that hers is a big family, and someone always seems to be cheering or playing ball.
Casey enters the quarterfinal contest at 11-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 2A. The Warriors were state runners-up a year ago in their third try for a state championship. Casey also finished second in Class 2A in 1982.
