BRAZIL — Despite trailing virtually the entire first half and giving up five touchdowns in the first 18 minutes of the game, host Northview put together nine good third-quarter minutes and threatened to wrest a high school football game away from visiting Terre Haute North on Friday.
But the Knights’ 36-35 lead lasted a little more than a minute before one of North’s many big plays put the Patriots ahead again, and the visitors got the last three touchdowns of the game for a 54-36 nonconference win.
“An offensive shootout,” coach Chris Barrett of the undefeated Patriots said afterward. “Northview played extremely well, and we did a lot of good things.”
“Way too many big plays [by the Patriots],” summarized coach George Gettle of the Knights. “They’re pretty talented, and we couldn’t get stops when we needed.”
Daniel Gabbard had four touchdowns and Ben King and Chris O’Leary two each for North, which turned into a running team for this game and gouged the Knights for 298 yards, averaging more than 10 yards per carry.
Quarterback Trent Lancaster fell just short of a 400-yard game for Northview, passing for 284 yards and rushing for 112 more. Drake Stevenson added 181 receiving yards, Zac Niehaus and Jonathon Bradshaw combined for 11 more receptions — and Bradshaw for three 2-point conversion catches — while Damon Hyatt rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown and came up with two turnovers.
Halfway into the second quarter it’s doubtful anyone at the game had found time to draw a deep breath. North scored four times in the first 15 minutes despite interceptions by Hyatt and Bradshaw that stopped two other drives.
Bradshaw’s pick set up Hyatt’s 1-yard touchdown run, Stevenson turned a short pass into a 70-yard score, and a 50-yard bomb from Lancaster to Stevenson set up the touchdown that cut North’s lead to 28-20 — for 15 seconds. Gabbard returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a score, and the Patriots retained their two-touchdown lead until intermission.
The Knights came out on a mission in the third quarter, however, Lancaster’s 29-yard run setting up a touchdown after 68 seconds of the third quarter. After a defensive stop, Northview went 80 yards in 12 plays with Lancaster throwing to Stevenson for the score. When Bradshaw caught his second conversion pass of the third quarter, the home team suddenly had its first lead.
“I looked at some of the things we had worked on at halftime, and I found a couple things I thought would work,” Gettle said of that third-quarter domination. “And they did, for awhile.”
Three plays later, however, North had regained the advantage after a 9-yard run by King, a 14-yard pass from O’Leary to Chad Holler and a 42-yard burst by Gabbard.
Northview had to punt from deep in its own territory, and King caught a 21-yard screen pass and had a 14-yard touchdown run in a three-play, 37-yard drive for a 47-36 lead. Then a fumble recovery by defensive lineman David Knight and an interception by King — sandwiched around Hyatt’s fumble recovery — kept the Knights off the scoreboard, and Gabbard added a clinching touchdown with 5:09 left.
“This is probably the tiredest I’ve been,” said King after playing both running back and free safety and excelling at both, “but it feels really good.”
Having played Northview four times, King knew what to expect from the rivalry.
“This was probably the most memorable one,” he said, “because [the Knights] were winning the game, but then we came back. It shows what kind of team we have; we don’t ever quit.”
Knight was also a two-way performer most of the way, at center and rushing the passer, coming out only occasionally — nce with a cramp.
“I’ve got to drink more water,” he quipped afterward. “[The Patriots] need me on offense at center, to try to lead the team, but I like to tackle; it’s my thing.”
“We’re having a hard time eliminating unforced mistakes,” said Barrett, who may have been referring to the blizzard of yellow flags that hampered both teams at times. “[The Knights] made some plays, but we’ve got to play better defensively. But we had a lot of good effort and a lot of good plays.”
“We had a lot of positives,” said Gettle, “but if you get in that point range, you should have a chance to win the game. But the beginning of our schedule is the tougher part, and that should help us as the season progresses.”

Goatee, Bertoli ran away with Spring Athlete of the Year
When honoring athletes after a season of excellence, the phrase “what might have been” doesn’t usually come up.

South runs into ‘buzzsaw’ at girls tennis semistate
Postmatch interviews don’t often begin with a coach and a reporter ready to blurt out the same word, but that was the case for Bill Blankenbaker and his interviewer Saturday morning after the Center Grove Semistate for girls high school tennis.
Unfortunately for Blankenbaker’s Terre Haute South team, that word was “buzzsaw.”
Greenwood’s Kawamoto twins made quick work of the top of the Braves’ singles lineup, so despite stellar efforts by both South doubles teams the Woodmen’s 3-2 victory didn’t seem all that close.
Greenwood moves on to Fishers, where it plays Floyd Central or Jasper on Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Also playing Friday, but at Park Tudor, will be South’s Miranda Camp and Nicole Howe, who reached the individual doubles finals for the second straight season by virtue of their 6-4, 6-2 win over the Greenwood team of Taylor Hudnall and Brittany Toney.
“It’s really exciting,” said Howe of the prospect of a second straight finals trip, “but I wish our team could’ve gone with us.”
