Castle takes North golf invite

Terre Haute South fourth, Northview fifth at Terre Haute North Invitational

TERRE HAUTE — Castle won its second girls high school golf tournament of the season Saturday, shooting 321 to take top honors in the Terre Haute North Invitational played at Hulman Links.

Lafayette Jeff’s A team took second with 338 followed by Martinsville with 351. Terre Haute South took fourth with 393, edging Seymour and Northview at 394, followed by Lafayette Jeff B, Lapel, Chatard and the host Patriots.

Seymour junior Paxton DeHaven took medalist honors. Kayla Katterhenry of Castle was second with 74 and Taylor Wilson of Martinsville and Kelsey Parrish of Castle tied for third, each with 81.

Par was 71 for Saturday’s play.

“We made No. 18 a par-3 hole,” explained North coach Abe Nasser Jr.

Castle, ranked 11th in the first poll of the season, also won the Titan Invitational this past week and tied for first in another tournament but took second on fifth score.

“We were third in our fourth tournament when we were without our No. 3 player,” said fifth-year Castle coach Josh Kain.

Castle had scores ranging from 74 to 84 to notch the championship.

Three players are back from last year’s team that finished 15th in the state.

“I’m pleased with our score with the conditions. We got off to a tough start but hung in there,” Kain noted.

DeHaven, a junior, went 33-38 for her low score of 71 with three birdies. She was medalist in the Martinsville Regional with 75 last year and said her best high school score has been 70.

“I got off to a rough start today,” DeHaven admitted.

DeHaven and Katterhenry played in their fourth match of the week. The Castle senior was medalist in two of the matches and had a season-best 70 at Cambridge in the Titan Invitational.

She took third in the state last season.

“I thought the course played short today … it was in good shape,” Katterhenry said.

Nicole Anderson led the host team with 82, while Karlie Atkinson had 87 to lead Northview and Alexandria Pickens’ 91 was best for South.

Anderson and Atkinson each had their best 18-hole scores in high school play.

Anderson says she intends to play college basketball at Miami of Ohio, making a change in schools after the coach at Bowling Green — where she originally committed — was named to coach Indiana.

Northview opened its season Thursday by placing fifth in the Edgewood Invitational played at Cascade.

Coach Bob Treash said the Knights are without Megan Heaton, who has been in England with the Northview dance team for the Olympic Games.

“She should have her practices in and be able to play Tuesday [in the Terre Haute South Invitational],” he said.

The coach said he was pleased with the Knights’ finish in the Edgewood Invitational.

“We shot 383 and had a much better finish than in the past. The girls got off to a rough start today … I’m satisfied,” said Treash.

Anna Potter, one of the veterans on the North roster, remains sidelined with a knee injury incurred playing tennis.

“She may be able to play later in the season,” Nasser mentioned.

The Patriots played in their fourth tournament of the week.

  • Freshman group adds to Big Four teams' baseball tradition

The Terre Haute North-Terre Haute South high school baseball series wasn’t an inning old last week before T.J. Collett of the Patriots lashed a run-scoring single.
That hit helped the Patriots take a 2-0 lead, but in the top of the second inning a three-run double by Justin Jenkins sparked the visiting Braves to a four-run inning.
North tied the score in the bottom of the second inning, Collett driving in another run. And just before rain caused the game to be suspended, South called Logan Ames in from its bullpen for some solid pitching.
Not bad for a trio of freshmen. And the weekend hadn’t even started yet.
