CASEY, ILL. —
Newton built a big lead and held on to defeat Casey 72-69 in Illinois high school boys basketball Monday night.
The Eagles improved to 18-3 in the makeup game against their future Little Illini Conference foes.
Newton had a 21-15 lead after one stop, led 42-32 at halftime and took a 56-49 lead into the fourth frame.
The Eagles scored four points to open the final period — hitting two free throws following a questionable technical foul — for their biggest lead of the night at 62-49.
Casey cut the deficit to 66-60 and Zach Murphy’s basket made it 70-69, but he failed to convert the three-point play, missing a free throw, and Newton hit two of four free tosses to close out the scoring.
Casey began a busy week of basketball with the game, having three more games this week starting with Chrisman tonight. Newton will entertain Robinson tonight.
Ethan Blankenship led the 10-8 Warriors. Brandon Wolfe had 13 and Trivette Scales tallied 12.
Peyton Wyatt led the Eagles with 24 points. Dylan Davidson scored 22, getting 16 in the first half, and Lucas Stone had 10.

• Check presentation — The Clay City High School girls basketball team, which has been raising funds throughout the season for cancer research, will present a check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of the Wabash Valley on Friday, prior to the boys game against Shakamak.

Joie Gadberry had a game-high 14 points and Carlie Booe added 11 for the winners, while Aubrey Evans scored 13 for North Central.

New route leads to same place for South girls tennis
For so many years, the road to the IHSAA girls tennis state finals for local teams ran through Vincennes (regional) and Jasper (semistate). In other words, south and more south.
This year, their trip was re-routed through Greencastle (regional) and Center Grove (semistate). So it cnahged to east and more east. -

South Vermillion softball's late-season surge comes to end
A late-season surge by South Vermillion wasn’t quite enough to halt a high school softball sectional winning streak by the host team Thursday night, as Edgewood got on top early and held on for a 5-2 win in the championship game of the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.
