Prep wrestlers hit mat for sectional action

TERRE HAUTE — Nine high schools will send athletes onto the Northview mats today to compete in the wrestling sectional.

Along with the host Knights, athletes will be representing Terre Haute South, Terre Haute North, West Vigo, Sullivan, Owen Valley, Edgewood, Bloomington South and Bloomington North.

Three mats will be used all day — a new format for this year’s sectional — and action will start at 9:30 a.m.

Terre Haute South’s top records going in include senior Tsali Lough (34-2 in the 160-pound weight class), senior Sam Cook (18-3 in 182), freshman David Lewis (24-9 in 113), senior Danny Henderson (23-10 in 138), sophomore Alex Mimms (22-10 in 285), junior Ryan Uppal (21-12 in 106), junior Nate Arguello (13-4 in 120) and senior Zach Horstman (20-12 in 195).

Some of Terre Haute North’s top performers are junior Eric Elia (24-9 in 120), sophomore J.J. Low (24-8 in 106) and senior Bryan Hyde (19-13 in 126).

West Vigo’s best competitors during the regular season have been senior Ben Bird (23-2 in 195), junior Jacob Creasey (16-2 in 138), senior Matt Green (12-3 in 285) and sophomore Richard McClain (13-7 in 182).

Northview has been led by senior Aaron See (33-3 in 220), senior Caleb Nicosin (30-6 in 106), junior Justin Sampson (30-6 in 285), junior Jesse Miller (27-8 in 195), senior Brody Girton (20-8 in 160) and senior Baylor Girton (19-7 in 145).

Sullivan is slated to bring senior Jedidiah Cox (27-1 in 145), sophomore Cory Orndorff (26-1 in 126), senior Nate Sullivan (24-2 in 120), senior Joseph Gilham (21-4 in 113), junior Colt Thompson (23-5 in 138), sophomore Jonathan Sullivan (21-8 in 160) and senior Riley Witvoet (20-9 in 152).

n Other sectional action today — The Crawfordsville Sectional will include South Vermillion, Rockville, Turkey Run and North Vermillion.

The Avon Sectional will include Greencastle, South Putnam and Cloverdale.

The top four finishers in each weight class at each sectional will advance to the individual regional tournament and each sectional team champion will move on to the team regional.

Admission at each sectional is $5.

• New route leads to same place for South girls tennis

  For so many years, the road to the IHSAA girls tennis state finals for local teams ran through Vincennes (regional) and Jasper (semistate). In other words, south and more south.
  This year, their trip was re-routed through Greencastle (regional) and Center Grove (semistate). So it cnahged to east and more east.

• South Vermillion softball's late-season surge comes to end

  A late-season surge by South Vermillion wasn’t quite enough to halt a high school softball sectional winning streak by the host team Thursday night, as Edgewood got on top early and held on for a 5-2 win in the championship game of the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.
  The loss was just the second in the last 12 games for the Wildcats. The Mustangs, however, haven’t lost a sectional softball game for eight years in a row.
