Cruelty for Terre Haute South came in the form of the final score against Class 5A No. 2 Ben Davis.
Hope came in how competitive the Braves were before the score got away from them.
Ben Davis defeated South 30-13 Saturday in a game resumed after Friday’s thunderstorms delayed the game in the second quarter.
The unbeaten Giants scored 20 unanswered points in the final 6 minutes, 15 seconds of the fourth quarter. South led 13-10 entering the final period and gave the Giants all manner of trouble before Ben Davis mustered a big play to turn the tide.
“I thought our guys competed as hard as we could’ve expected. We had a good week of practice and the kids believed in themselves. We executed well for three-and-a-half quarters and gave ourselves a chance against the No. 2 team in the state,” Raetz said.
South (2-4, 0-4) put itself in a position to lead after a couple of defensive stops when the game resumed. Ben Davis (6-0, 4-0) drove into field goal position to end the second quarter, but the Giants missed a 50-yard field goal. Ben Davis got the ball to start the third period, but the same scenario played out as a 40-yarder hit the crossbar.
The Braves then rode the hot hand of quarterback Danny Etling. The Purdue recruit completed his first five attempts of South’s opening second half drive which helped the Braves get to the Ben Davis 10.
The Giants held firm and South’s Adam Kahn kicked a field goal, but Ben Davis was offsides on the kick. Facing 4th-and-1, Raetz took the points off the board and went for it. South’s Michael Watt was stuffed at the line of scrimmage, however, and it seemed an opportunity was lost.
However, on the ensuing Ben Davis play, Daion Calhoun fumbled and South’s Nic Keller recovered at the Ben Davis 7. Three plays later, Etling found Jacob Johnson for a 7-yard touchdown and South led 13-10.
“He’s a tough kind and he cares. He wants to be out there with teammates. He’ll get ready to play next week and give us a good game,” said South coach Mark Raetz on Etling, who continues to play through a right ankle injury.
Ben Davis tied the game with a field goal at the 9:57 mark of the fourth quarter and South’s ensuing drive stalled at midfield after Etling took a sack. The Giants got the ball back at their own 25.
The game changed on a 62-yard run by Malcolm Fogle. It put the Giants inside the South 10 and Fogle scored a 4-yard touchdown out of the Giants’ Wildcat formation to make it 20-13 with 6:15 left.
South couldn’t muster anything more. Ben Davis booted another field goal with 2:03 left to make it a two-possession game and salt was poured into the wounds when Etling was picked off by O’Shea Heard for a 25-yard interception in the final two minutes.
Jacob Johnson had a big day for the Braves as he had seven receptions for 95 yards. Etling completed 13 of 26 passes for 162 yards.
Ben Davis quarterback Kyle Castner completed 20 of 28 passes for 175 yards.
South plays host to Indianapolis North Central next Friday in the Braves’ Homecoming game.
