Depending on when you read your morning paper, or if you choose to read online at tribstar.com, there’s a high likelihood the Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South football players are already on the practice field.
Today marks the first official practices for the upcoming 2012 high school football season in the state of Indiana.
Both North and South will conduct their first official practices at 7 a.m., their second practices beginning at 10:30 a.m. (South) and 11:30 a.m. (North). West Vigo “kicks off” its preseason a bit later, running from 2 to 10 p.m.
Will the highly documented extreme heat have a large impact on this year’s preseason? Not really, according to all three Vigo County coaches.
“We have always taken necessary precautions,” North coach Chris Barrett pointed out. “We move players in and out, shorten practices, take water breaks. Our athletic trainers monitor and keep us informed of relative readings of temperature and humidity.
“This year we moved up our starting times. Used to be we’d feed the kids at 7 a.m., then go out and practice. This year we’re starting practice at 7.”
“We’ll run our preseason practices early, get everything done by noon,” South coach Mark Raetz stated. “Each year there is a lot more emphasis how to handle the extreme heat situation. The school administration does a fine job advising us of [heat-related] things to keep on top of. We just try to be smart.”
“We’ve always had a game plan for the heat,” West Vigo coach Jeff Cobb added. “We’ve never had any, knock on wood, heat-related problems. We take water breaks, use reduced gear and take a long break between practices.”
While heat is enough of an issue every preseason, the addition of drought conditions has proved a huge obstacle in keeping practice and game fields in playable condition.
“Our practice field is in good shape,” Raetz, who could be seen lining South’s field early Saturday morning, noted. “We stay off of it in June and July so it can be in good condition.”
“The school corporation does a good job keeping their fields watered,” Cobb said, “because if not, the ground can get really hard.”
“Our practice field is not in real good shape, but our game field is holding up,” Barrett added. “A dry field puts players at a greater risk of injury. We just have to be smart about [the conditions].”
Imparting a bit of old-school sentiment to the situation, Barrett added with a chuckle, “Tough practice conditions have been part of football for hundreds of years … you should have seen the fields when I played.”
Now for some new-school football, all three coaches are excited of their teams chances in the upcoming season. Which is coming up fast, by the way, what with scrimmages on Aug. 10 and season openers slated for Aug. 17.
“We’re excited … like we usually feel this time of the year,” Barrett said. “I’m optimistic. The kids have worked real hard. We’re stressing senior leadership and improved team chemistry. That’s cost us in the past and we hope to control it [this year].”
“We’ve been making final preparations, having meetings, even lining the field,” Raetz said. “We’re excited. I feel we’ve had a good productive summer. But there is a lot of work to do before our first game.”
“We’ve had a very good summer, the kids have worked hard from senior to freshman,” Cobb said. “Going into two-a-days, I feel good. Feel confident with this group. Even the freshmen have put in time this summer.”

North baseball pulls away from South in sectional opener
In high school baseball little things mean a lot, and the crack in the door doesn’t have to be open very wide.
Terre Haute North burst through that crack in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday evening at Terre Haute South, scoring seven two-out runs and going on to a surprisingly easy 12-2 victory over the host Braves. -

When Tyler Seibert returned to the Terre Haute South track and field lineup Thursday for sectional action at Terre Haute North, it was like the midseason trade the Cubs made for Sutcliffe that earned them a playoff spot. -
