Robinson rolls past Paris

ROBINSON, Ill. — Whenever Paris strung a few plays together, Robinson had an answer Friday night in an Apollo Conference boys basketball game. The host Maroons held on for a 52-36 victory to go to 15-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference.

Josh Cary, the visiting Tigers’ 6-foot-6 big man, hit a 10-foot turnaround jumper and finished the 3-point play to get his team within 41-31 early in the fourth quarter. The foul was the fourth on burly Derrick Nicholas, sending Robinson’s post player to the bench.

But Robinson junior guard Aaron Siler had a quick answer, drilling a 3-pointer with six minutes, 40 seconds remaining. Siler’s shot wasn’t the dagger, but he followed his first field goal since scoring six in the first quarter with a baseline 2-pointer. Then 6-4 sophomore Michael Akande went above the rim for a rebound of a Siler miss from long range.

That finished off a 7-0 run that finished off the Tigers.

“That’s what good players do,” Robinson coach Mack Thompson said of Siler. “He creates angles for himself and gets shots when we need them.”

Siler led Robinson with 12 points and Nicholas had nine points and eight rebounds. Guard Cory Blount added seven points and two steals.

Akande had nine points, including a breakaway dunk. Thompson said he may be earning more minutes.

“It’s nice to see a 6-4 athlete learning to take those beatings inside and handle the physical physical play,” Thompson said. “He’s going to be a fun one to coach.”

Robinson, the newest addition to the 2012 Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic field, jumped out to a 10-point lead with some relentless rebounding by senior Zach Danks, who had six points and five rebounds at halftime.

Cary led the Tigers with 11 points and two blocks. Guard Austin Temples added 10 points
