Baby steps.
A baby takes that first step and grins, then attempts the second step and tumbles. The West Vigo High School girls took their first step with a victory Tuesday night in the Class 3A basketball sectional at Owen Valley.
On Friday night, the Vikings tumbled.
Brown County hit 18 of 24 free throws, including 7 of 9 in the fourth quarter to end the Vikings’ season 43-37 in the sectional semifinals. Brown County (14-8) will play the winner of the Greeencastle-Edgewood contest at 7:30 p.m. today.
West Vigo, with a roster of seniors Cassidy Carlson, Brooklyn Waters, Mikaela Silcock and Erin Barton, and six underclassmen, finished the year 6-16.
“We’re no longer the doormat. For years to come, it’s going to be a good thing [for West Vigo]. We got young girls… we got the best group of seniors that led the last four years. I told them, we lost and we could always win more games, but [the seniors] took this program in the right direction,” West Vigo coach Ryan Easton said.
Brooklyn Waters led the Vikings with 13 and seven rebounds as the only double-figure scorer.
Brown County was led by Kasrissa Lory with 16 points, including 8-for-8 shooting at the free-throw line.
West Vigo outscored Brown County 36-25 from the floor. But the taller Eagles took the ball inside repeatedly and the Vikings were whistled for 19 fouls and that led to 18 points at the free-throw line.
Brooklyn Waters got the Vikings off to a 9-2 start by hitting two 3-pointers, a 2 and one free throw. But over the next 9 minutes and 10 seconds, the Eagles went on a 17-2 run to take a 19-11 lead with 4:08 left in the second period.
“At the beginning [of the game], we looked to attack, had some shots fall, looked pretty good. Then we quit looking to attack a little bit,” Easton said.
When Brown County switched to the 1-3-1 defense, the West Vigo offense stalled. The Vikings could not get the ball inside against the taller Eagles and that size challenged perimeter shots too.
The Vikings hit just 6 of 20 from the floor for the first half and 16 of 39 (41 percent) for the game.
“That’s a credit to [Brown County]. We don’t go against that much size all year. It’s just a little bit intimidating … when you’ve got 6-foot, 6-foot, 5-8 and 5-7 and their off-guard is 5-7,” Easton said.
Brown County led 21-15 at halftime and extended the margin to 25-17 early in the third frame before West Vigo started a comeback.
Carlson hit and Charity Lane each hit 3s and Waters added a 2 and West Vigo closed within two, 29-27, going into the fourth quarter.
West Vigo’s Silcock tied the score 29-29 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. But Brown County scored the next eight points to go ahead 37-29 with 5:10 to play.
Again West Vigo charged back. Waters scored a layup, Silcock netted a bucket and Barton put in a fielder off a nifty pass from Waters to bring the Vikings within two, 37-35, with 2:47 to play.
After a series of turnovers and missed opportunities, Brown County went 6 of 6 at the free-throw line in the final 22 seconds to lock up the win.
But to Easton, having the Vikings play their way into a Friday night sectional game was a big step for the program.
“I’m extremely proud,” he said.
