Terre Haute North's early turnovers too costly at No. 6 Castle

BRAZIL — Turnovers can turn a promising effort into a nightmare in a hurry. Terre Haute North’s football team found that out the hard way against Class 5A No. 6 Castle in Friday’s season opener.

After going down 13 early, the Patriots had momentum entering the second quarter as they had scored a touchdown and were on their way to another which could have put North in front.

But then the turnovers began. And once they started, they didn’t stop in a grim second quarter for North.

The Patriots turned it over four times in the period. North’s generosity was converted into 19 points for the Knights and it was the key factor in their 35-24 victory.

North coach Chris Barrett was “conflicted” by the Patriots’ performance. When North was on, it was effective. But when the Patriots were off, it wasn’t pretty.

“[The mistakes] were catastrophic. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it. We had inexcusable mistakes and poor execution,” Barrett said. “I told my guys to bring a puke bag when we dissect this film. Not because of anything we say, but they’re going to see what happened and feel terrible.”

But Barrett had a caveat to that.

“We’re going to feel terrible in a positive way. We’re going to be so much better from watching that film and learning,” said Barrett, who also saw the sunny side of the Patriots’ performance. “There was no pout even though we gave it away. We made a ton of plays and only punted one time.”

North went into the game short-handed at starting running back Brother Scank missed the game with a knee injury. North turned to juniors Kai Stratten and Ricky Brookins. Both were effective, Stratten had 75 yards, but both cramped up during the game and could only be used in short bursts.

Despite that, North amassed 324 yards of total offense. The Patriots’ return game was also stout.

The game started poorly for North’s defense. Four plays into the game, Castle’s gifted senior wide receiver – Jon-Marc Anderson – took advantage of blown coverage on a pass in the flat. He split a pair of North defenders and went 61 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0.

Six minutes later, Castle used the threat of Anderson as a decoy to create space for Joe Redburn. Anderson drew two North defenders on a tight slant and Redburn, running a sideline streak, was all alone in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown to make it 13-0.

“We had two busted coverages that led directly to scores,” Barrett said.

Then North seemed to get its bearings. The Patriots answered with a 10-play, 64-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 20-yard strike from Chris Barrett II to Charles Dillahunt to make it 13-7.

When it got the ball back, North was on the move again. But a fumble by Lee Davis at the Castle 42 was recovered by the Knights and it stopped the North drive and its momentum.

Castle grabbed the momentum for good with 7:38 left in the second quarter. Barrett II, who had completed eight consecutive passes, dropped back for a middle screen pass at the North 11. Castle defensive end Grant Carter anticipated the play, snared the low pass, and raced in for a touchdown to make it 19-7.

Three plays later, Ricky Brookins fumbled a botched handoff and Castle recovered at the North 11. Anderson ran in a 5-yard reverse to make it 26-7 with 5:42 left in the half.

North’s misery wasn’t over. Barrett II was intercepted by Castle safety Alex Bush at the North 46. Eight plays later, Andrew Finch plunged in from a yard out to make it 32-7.

It wasn’t just turnovers that hurt North in the second quarter. North had five penalties for 53 yards in the stanza. One wiped out a 26-yard run by Brookins one play before he fumbled.

Without mistakes, North showed what it was capable of in the second half. Brookins, who had 151 kick return yards overall, got the Patriots started with a 70-yard return. Three plays later, Stratten would score on an 11-yard run to make it 32-14.

North later added a Zach Potter field goal after a long drive to make it 32-17 and give itself a puncher’s chance.

After a Castle field goal, North scored again. Barrett II rolled right on another middle screen, drew the Castle blitz, and found Stratten who raced 53 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-24.

But the early miscues proved too much to overcome and time ran out on the Patriots.

“We knew this was a formidable opponent. It was back-and-forth like it always is. We got that defensive touchdown and that was big for us,” Castle coach Doug Hurt said.

North (0-1) will play Terre Haute South next Friday at Memorial Stadium.
