CLAY CITY —
Shakamak took Class A Clay City Sectional honors in high school softball for the first time since 2009 Wednesday, defeating White River Valley 9-5 in the title tilt.
The Lakers will take a 16-12 record into a home regional game Tuesday against the winner of the Bethesda Christian-Indiana Deaf game to be played today.
Both teams scored twice in the first frame and the winners went ahead with a single run in the third and put four tallies on the board in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead into the seventh inning.
Relief pitcher Laura Irons retired the first two batters, but the Wolverines used three straight hits — including a double by losing pitcher Jordan McHenry — a walk and a Shakamak error to score three times before Irons got the final out to end the game played in warm, sunny conditions.
Freshman Kelsey Samm worked the first five innings and faced two batters in the sixth before being relieved by Irons.
“I wasn’t really tired but was struggling some. Laura did a great job,” said Samm, now 12-5 for the season.
B.A. Shipman, in his second season as the Lakers’ coach, talked about his seniors.
“Mikayla Crane has had a heckuva year for us,” he said. “She’s hitting over .500, she set the school record with 13 doubles and has five home runs. She’s one of the best players in the area.
“Jazmine Martin brings great leadership and does a nice job as the leadoff hitter. And Lacey Gilbert is one of the hardest workers on the team and has played several positions.”
Crane was a freshman pitcher on the 2009 sectional-winning team but now plays shortstop. “That’s my home,” she said of her position.
In addition to setting the record for doubles, she’s on pace to set marks in hits and batting average.
Junior Meghan Miller singled and doubled for the Lakers, drove in a run and scored twice, while Bryly Shipman singled and drove in two runs. Crane twice was hit by a pitch.
McHenry went the distance on the mound for the Wolverines, finishing 9-13, and led the offense, going 3 for 4 with a double and scored twice.

Highlights — For Shakamak, winning pitcher Kelsey Samm drove in a run; Meghan Miller was 2 for 4 with a double, scored twice and drove in a run; and Bryly Shipman singled and drove in two runs. For WRV, Jordan McHenry was 3 for 4 with a double and scored twice and Jasmine May was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Next — Shakamak (16-12) will be host to Bethesda Christian or Indiana Deaf for a regional game Tuesday. WRV finished 9-13.
