Braves creative in beating West Vigo

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South used aggressive baserunning and the strong pitching of junior Cheyenne Reinig to cruise to a 10-1 victory at West Vigo on Wednesday.

Mackenzie McGregor got the scoring started for South in the first when she drilled a double to score fleet-footed courtesy runner Holly Jones from first base.

South’s offense exploded for four runs in the third as consecutive hits by Marissa Stout, Ashley Watkins, Haven Eder and Brianna Price led the way. The Braves added four more in the fourth to put the Vikings away as Shelbie Scamihorn and Marissa Stout connected for doubles.

The Braves also forced the Vikings into mistakes in the field by making daring plays on the bases.

The 6-4 Vikings’ errors were uncharacteristic, coach Cherish Easton said.

“We made some mental mistakes that we normally don't,” Easton said. “And we didn’t make up for it with the bats.”

While Leslee Walters collected two hits and scored the Vikings’ only run in the fourth, Reinig kept the Vikings’ bats idle.

The right-hander improved to 3-1 on the season despite undergoing shoulder surgery to repair her labrum and rotator cuff in November.

“I didn’t expect to be pitching at all because of my surgery,” Reinig explained. “I’ve got to rely a lot more on spin and more movement and hitting spots since I don’t have the velocity.

“Today, we did really well defensively behind me. We just played with a lot more energy than we’ve been playing with.”

Coach Steve Woerner of the Braves agreed, complimenting his players' assertiveness on the bases.

“I felt like that was what turned the game in our favor,” Woerner said. “We were hitting balls right at them, and they were making plays, but we got aggressive and made some things happen. We’re also blessed with a really deep bench.”

Woerner’s team improved to 10-4 behind an explosive offense, but the team has potential to do more, he said.

“We still aren’t hitting the ball, only one home run in 14 games. I expected us to really pound the ball this year.”
