BLOOMFIELD —
Sullivan jumped out to a 9-0 lead and were never threatened in a dominant 48-25 win over Eastern Greene in a semifinal game of the Class 2A Bloomfield girls basketball sectional inside Glover Gymnasium on Friday.
Sullivan shot at a torrid 60 percent pace in the first half in building a commanding 34-11 advantage. Overall, the Arrows outshot Eastern 52 to 28 percent, and dominated the rebounding 32-12.
Sullivan’s 6-foot-2 junior Rhagen Smith, an Indiana State University recruit, drew a lot of attention defensively. She was limited to just three field goal attempts this time out, but the Arrows did not miss a beat.
Sydney Chapman and Sierra Walters picked up the slack, pacing the Arrows with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
“We jumped on [Eastern Greene] good because of Sydney Chapman,” Sullivan coach Julie Meeks pointed out. “She’s our leading scorer tonight and I was so glad to see that. It gives her a little more confidence. She’s really been coming on strong. She’s got to be prepared to take that shot and that’s what she did tonight.
“She’s such a great defensive player, sometimes she thinks that’s just her role on this team. It’s not. I like to see her take her outside shot and score for us.”
Smith scored seven points, making 2 of 3 shots, but did share team-high honors with seven rebounds and had a pair of blocks — the Arrows blocking five shots, by four different players.
Because of the blowout and a much different substitute pattern, another strange stat emerging was the seven boards from Sullivan’s smallest starter on the floor, 5-3 point guard Jaleigh Gilham.
“Our shot selection [was good], we were patient, reading the defense,” Meeks added.” I told them tonight not to force anything, let’s not force the ball to Rhagen [Smith]. Rhagen draws a lot of attention, so I it was nice they got it inside to the other players. Let them double down [on Smith], we have other scorers.”
After a quick turnover, the Arrows scored on their next five possessions for that 9-0 lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
Sullivan followed up that initial burst with a 15-2 run crossing over into the second quarter, then an 8-0 run ballooned its lead to 34-9 with about 47 seconds left to intermission.
Sullivan (20-3) will face North Knox (14-10) in tonight’s 7:30 p.m. championship game.
In the opener, North Knox trailed throughout until late in the fourth quarter, slipping past host Bloomfield 41-38. NK’s 6-1 sophomore Maria Gugliotta led all scorers with 24 points, including the game-winning shot with about 17 seconds left.
