TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute North and Indiana State University graduate Kylie Hutson heads a list of 13 athletes and coaches who will be inducted into the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame early next month.
An induction ceremony is scheduled Feb. 1 at the IATCCC track and field clinic at the Sheraton Hotel at Keystone at the Crossing in Indianapolis, and a reception in their honor is Feb. 2 at the IATCCC Hall of Fame on East Margaret Avenue.
Hutson competed during the weekend in an indoor meet at Carbondale, Ill., after placing seventh but failing to advance from the U.S. Olympic trials last summer. She has already won five national championships in pole vault — two NCAA indoor titles, two NCAA outdoor championships and the 2011 USATF outdoor championship — and her personal-best vault of 15-feet-5 is fourth on the all-time U.S. list.
At North she competed in volleyball and diving in addition to track and field, where she was a three-time state finalist — fourth and fifth in pole vault and ninth, seventh and ninth in long jump. She was a national qualifier in all eight of her seasons at ISU, four times indoors and four times outdoors.
Other inductees are coaches Don Cotton and Roberta Wildman-Foust and athletes Don Elser, Brandys Green, Temeka Kincy, Homer Knee, Marcus Lewis, Ralph Mittank, John Northam, Zakiya Robinson, Russell Smith and Ken Waterhouse.
Don Cotton — Coach at Huntington North since 1969, his 44-year career includes 10 state-finalist teams in cross country, 16 all-state track participants and 33 conference championships. His team was fourth in the 2004 boys state cross country meet, and his teams have won 72 percent of their meets.
Roberta Wildman-Foust — Coached four state championship teams and three runner-up teams in girls track during a 22-year career at Fort Wayne South.
Don Elser — Competed at Gary Mann from 1928-31 and was the state shot put champion and the 100-yard dash runner-up in 1931. While at Notre Dame was second in shot put and second in the 220 low hurdles and placed seventh in the 1936 Olympic decathlon trials. He competed professionally in football and basketball, coached football and track at Gary Mann and officiated Big Ten football and basketball, including the 1958 Rose Bowl.
Brandys Green — Competed for Lawrence North on state championship teams in 2001, 2002 and 2003, winning both 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles in 2003.
Temeka Kincy — Won the state 800-meter race in both 2003 and 2004 at Lawrence North, then was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first-team selection and a two-time Arthur Ashe Scholar-Athlete at Texas. Competed in the 2008 Olympic trials.
Homer Knee — Second in the state in shot put in 1924, then broke the state record in that event by nearly four feet while winning in 1925 while competing for Wabash High School. He also excelled in football, basketball and wrestling, winning the 1925 state heavyweight championship in the latter, and attended Cumberland College before becoming a coach and administrator in Mississippi and Tennessee.
Marcus Lewis — Was a two-time state long jump champion while competing for Lawrence North from 1999-2002. His runner-up time in the 100-meter dash in 2002 is still sixth-best all-time, and he ranks 20th on the all-time state scoring list.
Ralph Mittank — The first Indiana pole vaulter to break 11 feet using a wooden pole while winning the 1916 state championship for Fairmount Academy. Also a member of his school’s Sweet Sixteen basketball team and played semi-pro basketball and baseball.
John Northam — The first Indiana broad jumper to break 22 feet while competing for Sheridan from 1919 to 1922.
Zakiya Robinson — Won the maximum 16 state-championship medals while competing for Fort Wayne Northrop from 2001 to 2004 in sprints, long jump and relays. She anchored three state-championship relay teams that still rank first or second on the all-time performance list.
Russell Smith — Won back-to-back state championships in the 880-yard run and placed fifth and first in broad jump (beating future Garfield Olympian Greg Bell in his championship season) while competing for Anderson High School from 1945 to 1948. Was a three-sport athlete at Anderson College, setting five school records in track, and competed in the 1952 Olympic trials.
Ken Waterhouse — Won two state championships his senior year, the 1981 cross country championship and the 1982 1,600-meter championship, while competing for Bloomington South from 1979 to 1982. Also had three state runner-up finishes in track and became an All-American at Brigham Young.
