Robinson was a winner in its debut in the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic on Thursday.
The Maroons improved to 10-1 with their 78-67 victory over Terre Haute South and will take on defending Classic champ Terre Haute North this afternoon.
“We weren’t awed by the atmosphere. We hit some shots early and did a good job of neutralizing Jeffrey Turner in the first half,” said Robinson coach Mack Thompson.
The Maroons shot 59 percent for the game and connected on 15 of 22 shots with four 3-pointers in the first half for 68 percent and had a big edge on the boards.
“We usually shoot pretty well. We had some good shots. We need to do a better job taking care of the basketball,” said Thompson.
The teams were tied at 7-7 midway through the first half but Robinson scored seven straight points to go up 14-7 and had a 19-10 lead after 16 minutes.
The Maroons had the first two points of the second stanza for a 21-10 and had a 37-20 advantage at the intermission.
South outscored the Maroons in the third canto and trailed 52-39 going into the fourth frame when the Braves cut the lead to 77-67 on one of Turner’s 3-pointers.
The Maroons hit free throws for their final 12 points. Cory Blount had the final four points for the winners.
Four players scored in double digits for the Maroons. Aaron Siler led the way with 25 points and was 5 of 6 from the line.
Derrick Nicholas had a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards while Michael Akande had 16 points and eight rebounds, going 8 for 8 from the field.
Blount finished with 14 points and had a game-high four steals.
Turner matched Siler for game scoring honors with 25 and he pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Kevaris Gregory was the other South player in double digits with 17 points and he had three steals and five rebounds. Phillip Tofaute had nine points and five boards.
“We had to play our best to beat Robinson and did not bring our best in the first half. Robinson is a very good team, is well-coached and plays together,” said South coach Scott Ridge.
“Kevaris had a great game on both ends of the court. The kids are disappointed . . . we have to be ready to battle for the consolation championship,” he said.
The Braves are 3-6 and face Turkey Run today.
