INDIANAPOLIS —
After trailing by 15 at halftime, Terre Haute North’s boys basketball team got off to a nice start in the second half and cut its deficit to seven against Class 4A No. 3 Indianapolis North Central.
One more make and perhaps the Patriots would have made the Panthers sufficiently worried enough to start to crack. Unfortunately for the Patriots, that bucket didn’t fall.
North Central collected itself, got a few baskets of its own, and then kept on scoring. The Panthers pulled away for a 68-48 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference victory.
Ross Sponsler led North with nine points. Ronnie Johnson and Patrick Ingram co-led North Central with 17.
The Patriots (13-4, 1-3) were short-handed. North knew it would play without Matt O’Leary, who missed the game due to a concussion suffered against Terre Haute South. Also missing was Steven Davis, who missed the game because of the flu.
“We planned on starting Davis. But we had some guys step up and play well,” North coach Todd Woelfle said.
North Central’s three-quarter court pressure hurried the Patriots in the first quarter. The Patriots had seven first quarter turnovers, but when it was able to break the press, it had some success hanging in there. It was 12-8 with 3:49 to go in quarter until the Patriots’ scoring dried up. The Panthers finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 20-8 lead.
The Patriots cut the deficit to 25-18 with a good second quarter start as North worked the ball around well before North Central’s defenders could harass them.
But the Patriots couldn’t hold serve on the defensive end. The Panthers (16-4, 3-2) began to penetrate the lane with little resistance, and if they didn’t convert on the first shot, they usually got a second-chance. The Panthers ended the second quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 35-20 halftime lead.
North exited its halftime locker room inspired as a 10-2 run cut its deficit to seven. But the bucket North needed to chop further into its gap never came.
“I really liked our energy coming out in the second half. But they made a basket, we turned it over out of bounds, and we were never really able to cut down the gap,” Woelfle said.
North Central ended the third quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 53-34 lead and effectively put the game out of North’s reach. North finished with 23 turnovers and went to the line just three times. North Central was 13 of 18 from the line.
Despite the loss, there were positives for the Patriots. Charles Dillahunt contributed eight points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench. Patrick Hart scored seven as he made 3 of 4 from the field.
“We turned the ball over too many times and didn’t shoot well, but I was proud of their effort,” Woelfle said. “But there were some positive things. I think this game will help us at the end of the season.”
North will play host to Evansville Reitz tonight.
