ROCKVILLE —
It was a game of fits and starts, but host Rockville finally overcame a stiff challenge from visiting West Vigo in a 53-46 victory in boys high basketball action on Saturday.
Rockville’s standout player, 6-foot-7 Lane Mahurin, was a bit off his game, still in the early stages of coming back from a dislocated kneecap. But the Rox proved coach Dave Mahurin’s claim they are not a one-man team.
Gary Ulrich picked up the slack in the first half, scoring all of his game-high 15 points. Joel Wittenmyer picked up the slack in the second half, scoring 11 of his 13 points.
“Typical Rockville-West Vigo game,” coach Mahurin stated. “I thought it was a very exciting game, the kids played hard. We’re just very pleased to win the game.”
Mahurin, the player, impacted as well, scoring 12 of his 14 points in the second half and helping out with some key assists — most of them to Wittenmyer. He even helped run the point in the latter stages of the game.
“We’re just thrilled Lane’s back on the court,” coach Mahruin added. “We really didn’t think he’d be back [at all] the night he got hurt.”
Asked if playing back-to-back games was a factor in his son’s play, coach Mahurin replied, “He’s playing well, considering he has no [basketball] legs at all right now.
“Joel Wittenmyer was huge for us tonight. We used our bigs to enter into Joel in the second half and West didn’t seem to have an answer for Joel inside. Whatever it takes, we just care about winning.”
West Vigo jumped to an early 6-1 lead, partly due to the Rox celebrating Senior Night with an all-senior starting lineup, not its usual starters. Even Clint White, out all season with a knee injury suffered at the end of football season, made a cameo appearance.
Ulrich caught fire soon after with three straight 3s to put the Rox up 17-10 before West Vigo’s Jordan Houser hit a 3 to pull the Vikings within 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Rox scored the first nine points of the second quarter, then the Vikings answered with the next eight points. The Rox didn’t score the final five minutes and neither team scored the final two minutes, 33 seconds of the first half.
The Rox stretched its lead to 29-21 early in the third quarter, but West Vigo rallied to assume its only lead of the game. Back-to-back 3s by Cody Thornton and Adrien Corenflos, followed by a spinning drive to the hoop by Houser, put the Vikes up 30-29.
Mahurin answered with an inside hoop 33 seconds later, starting a 18-5 run to send the Rox in front 47-35 with just under four minutes to go in the game.
Once again, the Vikings rallied with 3s by Kyle Stewart and Nathan Gregg to close the gap to 47-42 with 2:33 left. But the Rox closed out strongly, not allowing West Vigo to get any closer.
Houser was the only West Vigo player to score in double figures with 13 points. Corenflos led all rebounders with 11.
“I thought this was a great environment to help us get ready for the sectional,” coach Joe Boehler of the Vikings stated. “I think Rockville is a quality basketball team and could possibly compete for a [Class A] state championship. They are a quality basketball team with a lot of quality players.
“I was really proud of our kids to battle back to get the lead late in the third quarter. Just didn’t make enough plays that we needed to make down the stretch. Again, we played a good team in a hostile environment. I think that’s only going to make us better down the road.”
Speaking of down the road, it doesn’t get any easier as both teams face stiff challenges next week — coincidentally, both on the road.
Rockville will attempt to clinch the Wabash River Conference championship at Attica on Saturday. The Rox are 6-0 in the WRC while Attica is 5-1 and will be seeking a share of the title. West Vigo will battle a highly ranked Sullivan team in a Western Indiana Conference showdown on Thursday.
