Miners battle back to take title

North, with medalist Lewellyn, and Owen Valley also advance

LINTON — Linton used a strong back nine in the cold and rain on Monday to win the high school boys golf sectional hosted by the Miners at Phil Harris Course.

The Miners trailed Owen Valley and Terre Haute North at the turn but shot 142 on the back to win with 293, edging North with 297 and Owen Valley with 299.

All three teams will advance to the Washington Regional to be played Thursday at Country Oaks, along with individual qualifiers Nathan Pirtle of Sullivan, Dylan Nesty of Northview and Ryan Cahill of Terre Haute South.

South carded 315 to finish fourth followed by Sullivan with 317 and Northview with 324 to round out the top six.

North senior Grant Lewellyn was medalist with a 3-under-par 68. Ben Boyd of Linton was second with 69, while Pirtle, Clayton French of Linton and Alan Jackson of Owen Valley were next with 70s.

French and Boyd each shot 33 on the back for the Miners and French birdied the last three holes in the last group on the course to help provide the margin of victory for the Miners.

It is Linton’s third golf sectional championship, the others coming in 1989 and 2006. Coach Derek Bradbury was a player on the ‘89 team and he now has titles as player and coach.

Boyd and French led the winners with their 69 and 70 while Luke Jerrells shot 76 and Koye Kaiser 78 for the Linton scoring.

“I am pleased for the team and the way they came back and played on the back with Clayton having birdies on the last three holes. It was tough. We’ve had a good year … and will try to continue it in the regional,” said the coach.

North coach Abe Nasser Jr. was pleased for his players.

“It was cumbersome weather. I’m proud of these boys the way they put their head down and gave Linton a run. Three of them had birdies on 18 to give us a shot,” he said.

“I could not be happier … and I am really pleased with what Grant did to come back and play the way he has,” he added.

Lewellyn led North with his 68 with Adam LaGrange shooting 71, Ryan Baker 78 and Evan Perdiew 80 for team scoring.

Owen Valley coach Mike Beyers thought his team would have a chance to get out of the sectional if the Patriots shot 308 and they did better than that. He said the team was 22-8 but its only other 18-hole match had been the Western Indiana Conference match; OV finished third in that one.

Alan Jackson led the Patriots with 70. Matt Patterson shot 74, Cole Parker 75 and Alex Johnson 80 for the OV total.

“That was my best score of the year. I had four birdies. The greens were soft and I tried to take advantage of that,” said Jackson, a junior.

Lewellyn said his 68 was his best score of the year in a match. He went 35-33 with four birdies and an eagle on No. 12.

“I just put in a lot of time on the range after practice,” he said in working his way out of a little slump during the season. He will attend Indiana State University.

Boyd also had an eagle and four birdies in his round of 69, going 36-33. He had missed some matches due to a bruised thumb. “I did it playing basketball. I was out 20 days and had to have five practices before getting back in the lineup,” he said.

He hopes to play golf at Vincennes University.

Pirtle went 35-35 in carding his 70 to lead the individual qualifiers. Nesty was 39-36 for a 75.

A playoff was needed to determine the third individual qualifier as Cahill and Sam Mimms of Terre Haute South and Brennan Crooks of North Central all shot 76, with Mimms getting birdies on the last three holes to do it.

Cahill won the playoff on the second hole to earn his spot in the regional field.
