PREP ROUNDUP: Game times set for baseball sectionals

STAFF REPORT The Tribune-Star The Tribune Star Fri May 18, 2012, 11:39 PM EDT

TERRE HAUTE — Pairings and schedules are set for the Indiana High School Athletic Association tournament.

First-round games begin Wednesday with semifinal and championship contests slated for May 28.

Sectional winners will compete in four-team regionals.



Class 4A Plainfield Sectional

Wednesday — z5 p.m. Plainfield vs. Terre Haute North followed by Northview vs. Mooresville

May 28 — 10 a.m. Wednesday winners meet followed by Martinsville vs. Terre Haute South with championship at 6 p.m.

Class 3A Greencastle Sectional

Wednesday — 5 p.m. South Vermillion vs. West Vigo followed by Greencastle vs. Owen Valley

Thursday — Wednesday winners play followed by Edgewood vs. Brown County

May 28 — 11 a.m. championship

Classs 2A Speedway Sectional

Wednesday — 5 p.m. Speedway vs. South Putnam followed by Covenant Christian

May 28 — 10 a.m. Wednesday winners play followed by Cloverdale vs. Monrovia with championship at 7 p.m.

Class 2A Linton Sectional

Wednesday — 6 p.m. South Knox vs. Linton

Thursday — 5:30 p.m. Eastern Greene vs. North Knox followed by North Central vs. Bloomfield

May 28 — 11 a.m. Sullivan vs. SK-Linton winner followed Thursday winners meeting with championship at 7:30 p.m.

Class A Rockville Sectional

Thursday — 5 p.m. Attica vs. South Vermillion followed by Rockville vs. Covington

May 28 — 10 a.m. Thursday winners play followed by Turkey Run vs. Riverton Parke with championship at 7 p.m.

Class A Shakamak Sectional

Thursday — 7 p.m. White River Valley vs. Eminence

May 28 — 11 a.m. Clay City vs. Shakamk followed by Union vs. WRV-Eminence winner with championship at 8 p.m.

home runs in the first game of a doubleheader and added three of the

Wildcats¹ eight doubles in the victory in the nightcap.

n Robinson second at sectional — At Lawrencville, Ill., Robinson’s boys track finished second to Newton at the Lawrenceville Sectional on Friday. Maroons’ winners included Blake Hale (800 meter run winner), Nic Iovanic (shot put) and the 3,200 relay team.

Hale set a school-record in the 800 with a time of 1 minute, 55.71 seconds.

• West Vigo comes up short against 19-9 Brown County softball

  West Vigo got off to a good start but Brown County finished better in Class 3A high school softball sectional semifinal action Tuesday night at Edgewood.
  The Eagles bested the Vikings 7-5 and will meet South Vermillion, a 12-7 winner over Owen Valley, for the sectional championship on Thursday starting at 6 p.m.

  But on the Yankees, a 35-and-over team in the Terre Haute Men’s Senior Baseball League, Terry is “just a youngster” if you ask Larry Roesch, his 68-year-old teammate on the Volkers Group Yankees.

  When Tyler Seibert returned to the Terre Haute South track and field lineup Thursday for sectional action at Terre Haute North, it was like the midseason trade the Cubs made for Sutcliffe that earned them a playoff spot.

• Kehrt Award goes to Emily Bell, Lee Davis

  Emily Bell of Terre Haute South and Lee Davis of Terre Haute North are the 2013 recipients of the Willard M. Kehrt Mental Attitude Award.
  Bell and Davis were nominated by their schools and chosen in a vote by the Kehrt Award panel. Both will be recognized at awards assemblies later in the month at the schools.
  Bell played varsity basketball four years at South and is competing in track this season, running the 800 and two relays. “I wanted something to do my senior year,” Bell said.
  She plans to attend DePauw University and play basketball. DePauw is the reigning NCAA Division III champ in women's basketball.
  Bell tore an AÇL playing in a basketball tournament the summer after her sophomore season. She missed most of her junior season but came back to play her senior year and was second leading scorer and leading rebounder her final season.
  Bell also was leading rebounder her sophomore year.
