EVANSVILLE —
A promising start was nullified by a five-point second quarter in boys high school basketball Saturday night, when Terre Haute South lost 73-64 at Evansville Reitz.
The Braves had an 18-13 lead at the first stop, but wound up five points behind at halftime.
“We played very, very poorly in the second quarter,” coach Scott Ridge said by telephone Saturday night. “We didn’t handle the ball well … over 20 turnovers [for the game].”
The host Panthers did some defensive trapping in the second quarter, but that shouldn’t have been enough to rattle the Braves the way it did, their coach indicated.
“Our problems were mostly self-inflicted,” Ridge said. “Our sophomores played like sophomores, and we knew that would happen sometimes.”
South trailed by 12 points early in the second half, then rallied to tie the score — only to give up the next seven points. The lead was between two and 10 points the rest of the way.
Jeffrey Turner led the Braves with 23 points and Kevaris Gregory added 18. Jordan Summers had 16 points for Reitz, with Mario Barnes added 13, Jaylen Sanford 11 and Kameron Malone 10.
