Buss' 51 points lift Mount Carmel girls past Marshall

ROBINSON, ILL. — Marshall’s girls basketball team did its best, but it couldn’t stop a scoring fury by Mount Carmel’s Tyra Buss in the Robinson Thanksgiving Tournament championship game.

Buss recently committed to Indiana University.

The Lions finished second in the tournament. The Lions lost to Mount Carmel 60-56 in the championship game.

Kaydie Grooms had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions, who fell for the first time this season.

Buss had 51 points for Mount Carmel in the championship game. Buss, who recently committed to play collegiately at Indiana University, scored 144 points in four games in the tournament.

Earlier, Marshall defeated Guerin Catholic 59-35 in a semifinal game.

Grooms had 24 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and five blocks for the winners, while Ariana Kuhn chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks.

Both Grooms and Kuhn were named to the All-Tournament team.

Guerin Catholic finished third in the tournament with a win over Charleston in the third-place game.

Boys basketball

n Lions 2-1 at Lawrenceville — At Lawrenceville, Ill., Marshall went 2-1 in the opening two rounds of the Capital Classic for boys high school basketball teams this weekend.

The Lions lost 38-36 at the buzzer to Pinckneyville in their first game Friday and rebounded to defeat Neoga 72-23.

Marshall bested Lawrenceville 72-58 on Saturday and played for third place Saturday evening. Results were not available before the Tribune-Star’s news deadline.

Three Lions scored 16 points in the victory over Lawrenceville: Taylor Maurer, Walker Berner and Thomas Sisson. Maurer also had eight reboounds and six steals, while Sisson grabbed eight.



In other boys basketball action:

• Cloverdale 45, Riverton Parke 44 — At Mecca, Cloverdale’s Brandon Dorman converted a putback at the buzzer to the lift the Clovers over the Panthers.

Matt Haltom had 20 to lead Riverton Parke.

Auto racing



• Hagen, Larson win — At Perris, Calif., Darren Hagen and Kyle Larson were winners in the final U.S. Auto Club midget race of the season Thursday at Perris Auto Speedway.

Larson led the final 79 laps of the 100-lap feature in the Turkey Night Grand Prix with Jerry Coons Jr. second and Ryan Bernal third. Bryan Clauson flipped in the main event.

Hagen was fast qualifier and finished 15th in the feature. He is the 2012 USAC midget champ. Tracy Hines finished second in the totals.
