South becomes another victim in Martinsville’s destiny sectional run

Plainfield — The young boys on the Martinsville High School basketball team are obviously slow learners.

They never realized Friday night that Terre Haute North was the favorite to win the Class 4A Plainfield Sectional, and they never noticed on Saturday that Terre Haute South had landed several of what should have been knockout blows.

As a result, the Artesians are going to next week’s Seymour Regional after following up their 33-31 win over the Patriots on Friday with a come-from-behind 57-50 triumph over the Braves on Saturday.

“It just goes to show that even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while,” veteran coach Tim Wolf of the Artesians said afterward. “This was like the Miracle on Ice.”

That the Artesians, who entered the tournament with a 4-16 record and without a senior on their roster, believed in miracles was obvious all weekend, and they needed every fiber of that belief Saturday during what might forever be known as the John Michael Jarvis first quarter.

Jarvis scored 18 points in those first eight minutes, hitting all seven of his field goal attempts and nailing two 3-pointers from preposterous distances. And he was even more valuable to the Braves defensively.

He got two baskets in the game’s first 15 seconds, the second by stealing the ball in backcourt, and had six more points — a 3-pointer and a steal and three-point play — as South maintained a 13-8 lead after a little over five minutes.

Martinsville crept within two points on a Derek Krebs 3-pointer, but then Jarvis led the Braves to seven points in less than 40 seconds. When his defender backed off, he hit a 3-pointer from at least 30 feet out, then stole the ball to set up an Anthony McGill layup, then stole it again for his own basket. Martinsville broke South’s traps for a layup, but then Jarvis closed out his first quarter with another bomb from about 28 feet out.

It was 23-13 at this point, and Martinsville had done well to stay that close. Instead of wilting, however, the young Artesians ... well, as Wolf said later, “After we peed down our legs the whole first quarter, we were not too bad. And we defended well.”

With Krebs hitting two more 3-pointers and reserve center Shawn Downey freeing himself for three layups, the Artesians outscored South 15-6 to creep within 29-28. Ike Worrell restored some order for South with his own 3-pointer, however, and after Krebs suffered his first miss of the game, McGill hit a free throw that gave South a 33-28 lead at intermission.

Martinsville’s Seth Dow, in the meantime, led a defensive effort that kept Jarvis from attempting a second-quarter shot, although he had a pair of assists and another steal in the quarter.

Martinsville made a defensive change to start the third quarter, and Bryn Schwartz responded to it with back-to-back 3-pointers. Martinsville scored, but Jarvis stole the ball again to set up a basket by McGill and the South lead was 41-30 with the Braves seemingly having momentum.

“[The Artesians] came out [for the second half] in that triangle-and-two, and we were prepared for it,” coach Mike Saylor of the Braves said later. “They got out of [that defense] and went to their Plan B, but that worked out worse for us.”

“Mike [Saylor] made some adjustments at the half, and we weren’t guarding [Schwartz] too much,” Wolf agreed. “But I thought Dow did a very good job in the second half on Jarvis.”

That momentum South thought it had? Not so much. Two 3-pointers by Willy Spina and one by Dow cut the lead to two points, and Greg Spina hit a layup with 37 seconds left in the third quarter, and the Artesians had tied the score for the first time. They also got inside baskets from Logan Barker and Greg Spina to start the fourth quarter, completing a 15-0 run and creating the game’s only lead change.

Jermaine Smith came off South’s bench for a 3-pointer that broke a long scoring drought and cut the lead to 45-44, but Martinsville got the next two baskets. South got within four points twice, then cut the lead to 53-50 on Jarvis’s 11th and final steal and basket.

But the Artesians — who had assists on 22 of their 23 baskets — worked the ball until Dow got free for a layup in the final 30 seconds of the game. “Our go-to guy was anybody who was open,” Wolf said. When South couldn’t score, Krebs sewed up the game with two free throws with 8.1 seconds to go.

“I thought [the Artesians] just outplayed us,” Saylor said. “We played hard — John Michael Jarvis was the epitome of gutsy play — but we stood around too much instead of trying to get open. Bottom line, we just got outplayed.”

“They’re a good team,” Wolf said of the Braves, “and I love the way they play. They’ve been chasing [defensively] three nights ... and maybe they got a little tired.”

Jarvis had 22 points plus his 11 steals for South, with McGill adding 10 points. Krebs scored 18 and Willy Spina 17 for Martinsville, which shot 66 percent from the field and 53 percent from behind the arc.

Six seniors ended their South careers, and Saylor had words for all of them.

“John Michael Jarvis has been a major player in Terre Haute South history,” the coach said. “Final eight [as a team, last season], Junior All-Star, 1,000 points [he finished with 1,022] and a four-year starter.

“Ike Worrell [who played despite an injured ankle and was the game’s leading rebounder Saturday] may be the most improved player from his junior to his senior year in Vigo County history. Bryn Schwartz [nine points Saturday] was a solid player for us and helped us win quite a few. Jacob Tanoos [three points, three assists and a blocked shot] was very solid with so many big, excellent moments for us. [Reserves] Joey Etling and Bobby McKenna were excellent teammates and very coachable.

“I don’t think anybody predicted 14 wins for this team, or that we’d be in the sectional final,” Saylor continued. “To steal a quote from [North coach] Todd Woelfle [on Friday], it’s disappointing ... but we all need to realize [winning a sectional game] is not automatic.”
