TERRE HAUTE —
The bump and run is employed by defensive backs in football, but the tactic is not always utilized in track meets. In fact, the last lap of the night beared a slight resemblance to NASCAR, what with a bump and a word or two exchanged.
That’s why North-South track meets can be exciting.
To wit, this North-South boys meet came down to a winner-take-all final event, the 1,600-meter relay. North assumed an early lead on the first leg, then maintained that lead through the beginning of the final leg.
But South’s Tyler Seibert reeled in North’s Cole Seward, withstood a bump from Seward, then passed him and crossed the finish line first. With the five points for winning the event, South overcame visiting North 67-65 in the boys portion of the meet.
The girls meet was not nearly as dramatic, as North won all but one event to dominate South 109-23.
“I was about 10 meters behind so I decided to hang on and kind of stay behind [Seward] until the final 100 [meters],” Seibert described his final leg. “So I just waited for my chance, just came through for our team.”
Obviously, Seibert was pleased the South boys emerged victorious.
“It feels great, especially for our seniors,” he noted. “They deserve it. They’ve worked really hard this year and I was happy to pull through for them when we needed it.”
The versatile Seibert, a junior, indeed played a huge role in the Braves’ win, also winning the 400 (50.75 seconds), long jump (21 feet, 2 inches) and a runner-up finish in the high jump (5-10).
“Tyler’s really had a great track season,” South boys coach Mark Raetz said. “I think he ran his butt off on that last leg. I’d like to see him keep his composure a little better at the end, but overall I’m pretty proud of how he’s competed.”
While Seibert came up huge, the Braves had no shortage of other fine efforts.
Jeremy Patterson (110- and 300-hurdles) and Logan Hambrock (800 and 1,600) were double-winners. Other winners were Jackson Bertoli (3,200), Nic Jaeger (high jump) and Nic Keller (discus).
North had a double-winner in Dakota Schefke (100 and 200). Other Patriots’ winners were Connor Curley (pole vault), Lee Davis (shot put) and their 400 and 3,200 relays.
“The two teams are pretty equal and I think it’s fun in track to come down to the last event,” Raetz said. “[North] had a couple guys [for the Big 4] on Saturday that are big contributors and did a big job for them tonight.”
North’s girls won 15 of 16 meets, swept all three relays and had a trio of double-winners — Jordan Kuehner (300 hurdles, long jump), TaPring Goatee (800, pole vault) and Alissa Turpin (shot put, discus).
Other winners for the Patriots were Sarah Fears (100), Keirra Porter (100 hurdles), Jessi Conley (400), Spencer Grim (200), Chanli Mundy (3,200) and freshman Carson Smith (high jump).
South’s only winner was Nikki Thiede in the 1,600.
“Very pleased with everybody. We got a lot of good times, but it’s a North-South meet, you know … that happens,” North girls coach Mike Dason said.
“My throwers did just unbelievable, [Alissa] Turpin and [Brianna Burgess] both got their bests … both got their bests in the discus, Burgess in the shot put. Jordan Kuehner stepped up in the long jump.”
Dason was very pleased with the 1-2 finish of TaPring Goatee and Sydney Dickerson in the 800. Goatee won with a time of 2:19.85, Dickerson a close second at 2:19.99.
“TaPring [Goatee], the first time she’s run the 800 this year,” Dason said. “Sydney finally broke into the teens, that’s been her goal all year.”
In the high jump, Smith, Kelsey Thomas and Porter placed 1-2-3, all going 5-2. Kuehner was fourth at 5-1, nearly getting her third individual win.
“Three girls going 5-2 in the high jump … gee, make my life rough now trying to see who jumps at sectional,” Dason smiled.
