South Putnam uses land, air to get by Rockville

ROCKVILLE — South Putnam scored by land and air and smothered the Rockville offense on Friday night en route to a 27-0 non-conference high school football victory.

South Putnam sophomore running back Lucas Lorian rushed for 110 yards and one touchdown, while senior wide receiver Justin Bumgardner pulled down five passes for 126 yards and one touchdown in the Eagles second win of the season.

But the key to the game, on both sides of the football, was South Putnam’s ability to control the line of scrimmage. South Putnam rushed for 148 yards and quarterback Sawyer Arnold completed 7-14 passes for for 147 on offense.

The Eagles’ defense limited Rockville to just 66 yards of total offense. South Putnam’s defense came up with two turnovers, a fumble recovery by Joe Masters and a pass interception by Wes Reiner.

“The reason we can run the ball, catch the ball and throw the ball is because of our big guys up,” South Putnam coach Troy Burgess said.

Rockville coach Herb King agreed, but from a difference perspective.

“Their line dominated the ball game. It wasn’t won because of backs or anything that way. Defensively, I thought we challenged them and did some good things, but our offensive line didn’t block their defensive line at all,” King said.

South Putnam’s defense gave the offense excellent field position throughout the first half, leading to a 13-0 scored in the second quarter.

Rockville’s first two offensive plays of the night went for a negative eight yards with Ryan Chestnut coming up with a big second down tackle for the Eagles.

The Eagles first possession of the night started at the Rockville 37-yard line after a 17-yard punt return by Lorian. Facing a third down and 12, South’s Arnold hooked up with Bumgardner for 13 yards for a first down.

Arnold and Bumgardner teamed up five times for 63 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Seven plays after Bumgardner’s catch, Brandon Smith scored for South Putnam on a three-yard run.

A quarterback sack by South’s Morgan Grundlock led to a Rockville punt and the Eagles took possession on the Rox 35-yard line. Just seven running plays later, on a fourth down and inches, Lorian scored on a four-yard run. Zane Yon’s point-after-kick made it 13-0 with 6:11 left in the second period.

Rockville tried to catch South off guard, but the Eagles’ Riner intercepted the halfback pass. The Eagles took possession at their own 30-yard line, their worst field position of the half.

On second down, Lorian broke free for a 17 yard run and two plays later Arnold found Bumgardner again, this pass play covering 28 yards. Arnold went back to Bumgardnear again the 20-yard touchdown play and 20-0 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, South Putnam put together a four-minute drive. Smith, who scored the Eagles’ first touchdown, capped the night when he pulled in a Arnold pass for a 22-yard touchdown.

  • Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville

Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.

  • Freshman group adds to Big Four teams' baseball tradition

The Terre Haute North-Terre Haute South high school baseball series wasn’t an inning old last week before T.J. Collett of the Patriots lashed a run-scoring single.
That hit helped the Patriots take a 2-0 lead, but in the top of the second inning a three-run double by Justin Jenkins sparked the visiting Braves to a four-run inning.
North tied the score in the bottom of the second inning, Collett driving in another run. And just before rain caused the game to be suspended, South called Logan Ames in from its bullpen for some solid pitching.
Not bad for a trio of freshmen. And the weekend hadn’t even started yet.
