TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute North won its second high school boys golf championship of the week on Saturday, taking top honors in the Terre Haute South Braves Invitational played at Rea Park in cold, windy conditions.
The Patriots counted four scores in the 70s to win with 307. They also won the Vigo County championship earlier in the week.
Greencastle was second on Saturday with 313 and Linton took third with 318 while the host team carded 322 and Sullivan had 331 to round out the top five.
Greencastle won the season-opening Northview Invitational with Linton second and North third in that event.
Alec Davis of Greencastle and Adam LaGrange of Terre Haute North, both sophomores, each shot 3-over-par 75 and Davis won a playoff on the first hole to take medalist honors.
It’s the second medalist honor of the season for Davis. He shot a 70 at Forest Park and defeated teammate Luke Brotherton in a playoff to earn the honor in the Northview Invitational.
LaGrange had four birdies and Davis had three in their rounds. “The greens were slick and there was slow play but manageable,” said Davis, who also had a 34 at Brickyard Crossing this week to lead his team which shot a 149 in a nine-hole match.
Grant Lewellyn, Terre Haute North senior, and Clayton French of Linton each had 76 to tie for fourth and Lewellyn won a scorecard playoff to take home the third-place plaque.
Ryan Cahill led the Braves with 78. Luke Peoples and Drew Cahill each had 80s. Freshman Nathan Pirtle shot 78 to lead Sullivan while Derek Andre and Tyler Monroe each had 80s.
Larry Knight had 82 to pace Northview and Brandon Long tied for 10th with his 10th to lead West Vigo.
North coach Abe Nasser Jr. was pleased with his team’s play.
“The team played really well today. We are getting closer to how I think they can play. It is like a work in progress,” he said.
“I’ve gotten to know their games and we’re starting to put it together and do what it takes to put up a good score. They put up a good score on the front nine and held it together on the back. Adam played great for a sophomore and Grant and Sam were right behind him,” he added.
Greencastle concluded a good week, having won two nine-hole matches and finishing with its second top tournament finish of the season.
“It’s nice to have a second and an individual champion. Weather was a very big factor. The wind was blowing and it was cold. There were some good scores shot. Terre Haute North played well,” said coach Steve Paquin.
Linton coach Derek Bradbury said his team had “decent scores” after his team’s start.
“A lot of the kids were four or five over four holes. Not bad for today but we have to get more consistent off the tee. We were in the trees all day. If we can do that, I think we will be okay,” he said.
The Miners will be back in town to play West Vigo this week.
South coach Chris Cassell said he was surprised by the scores in the tournament.
“I thought if we shot 322, that would have gotten us in the top two and it got us fourth. I was not disappointed in our scoring really. I know we can still improve and I would like for us to get below 320 on our home course,” he said.
“Abe is doing a great job with North. He’s gotten a lot out of those guys and they are playing well.’ he added.
South will go against Greencastle on Monday at Rea Park while North plays at Sullivan the same day and meets Northview on Thursday at Forest Park.
Both teams will be at Hulman Links on Saturday, vying for honors in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Championships.

Freshman group adds to Big Four teams' baseball tradition
The Terre Haute North-Terre Haute South high school baseball series wasn’t an inning old last week before T.J. Collett of the Patriots lashed a run-scoring single.
That hit helped the Patriots take a 2-0 lead, but in the top of the second inning a three-run double by Justin Jenkins sparked the visiting Braves to a four-run inning.
North tied the score in the bottom of the second inning, Collett driving in another run. And just before rain caused the game to be suspended, South called Logan Ames in from its bullpen for some solid pitching.
Not bad for a trio of freshmen. And the weekend hadn’t even started yet. - More High School Headlines
