BRAZIL —
Terre Haute South’s boys and Terre Haute North’s girls prevailed on a record-breaking Saturday in the Big Four Track and Field Meet at Northview’s track complex.
South’s boys established three meet records, with five individuals winning seven events and sweeping the three relays.
“Our kids had good performances today with three new meet records and good results for the most part from the other guys,” South boys coach Mark Raetz said. “We were able to keep the [championship plaque] at South.”
North’s girls didn’t set any new records — the only girls’ meet record was eclipsed by West Vigo hurdler Janelle Lucas — but when their “rubber” hit the track, they had five individuals win six events and also swept the relays.
“A lot of our girls had hard workouts this week. We didn’t pull back any,” North girls coach Mike Dason noted. “They were complaining how rubbery their legs are. [Big 4] isn’t what we’re really focusing on, we’re focusing on June 1st. That’s what we’re looking at.”
While not nearly a record-setting day for the temperature, it certainly was on the hot side for the athletes.
“The heat came in quicker than we thought it was going to be,” Dason said. “But very happy with the girls that stepped up and got us some decent times. Just looking forward to moving on and getting ready for sectional, regional and then the state tournament.”
In the boys meet, South (96) outpointed North (71), followed by Northview (47) and West Vigo (30).
South started the meet with a record in the 3,200 relay, as Jackson Bertoli, Scotty Noble, Devon Fuson and Matt Barley ran a time of 8:19.09.
Individually, Bertoli also set a new mark in the 3,200 (9:36.69). The third record went to Nic Jaeger, leaping 6-feet, 8-inches — breaking his previous meet mark of 6-6 — to win the high jump.
“An extra inch today,” Jaeger said about setting a new personal record, his previous best of 6-7 was set earlier this season. “I’ve been working on it for the whole last half of the season, so I’m really happy I got it.
“I expected to get [6-8], I’ve just been stopping myself from getting it. I see 6-9 really easily coming, but I’m scared of it still,” he laughed.
South’s Logan Hambrock was hoping to improve on his meet record set a year ago in the 1,600. Hambrock trailed West Vigo’s Andrew Kump most of this year’s race, but won a full-out sprint to the finish. His time of 4:29.38 nipped Kump by 1.09 seconds, but came up 2.49 seconds short of his record.
“[The race] went out slow and I was happy with that,” Hambrock said. “Andrew really pushed the pace, he’s a great runner, and he almost lost me. I was lucky to come back and make it up.
“My goal was to go at the 300 [-meter mark], [Kump] took it at the [800] which is not my favorite spot to take it at. He almost won the race.”
South’s other two winners were double-winners — Jeremy Patterson (110- and 300-hurdles) and Tyler Seibert (400 and long jump). Patterson and Seibert were also part of the winning event to wrap up the meet, the 1,600 relay.
North had a pair of double-winners, Kevin Moore (100, 200) and Lee Davis (shot put, discus). Connor Curley won the pole vault. Northview’s lone individual winner was Nic Yocom in the 800.
Raetz likes the Big Four win — again — but he knows there is still work to do.
“Last year we won this meet, then we turned around and North killed us in the dual,” Raetz mentioned. “We’ve just got to keep competing hard, keep trying to get better and hopefully we’ll do that.”
In the girls meet, North (115.50) topped South (59.50), while Northview (37) and West Vigo (32) followed.
For the North girls, Alissa Turpin was a double-winner (shot put, discus). Other individual winners were Keirra Porter (100-hurdles), Jessi Conley (400), Sydney Dickerson (800) and Chanli Mundy (3,200).
Mundy lost to South’s Nikki Thiede in this event at last year’s meet at West Vigo, but this year that was not the case. Mundy led by the first turn, then gradually pulled away to top Thiede by nearly 19 seconds.
“Last year wasn’t so great so I was trying to use it as motivation,” Mundy said. “I’ve had a real rough patch for a few weeks so this was kind of a somewhat breakout race, a confidence booster.”
Mundy said the heat was a factor in her time of 11:34.92 being over eight seconds shy of the meet record.
“The heat definitely affected me,” Mundy noted. “It’s always hard for me to run in the heat … you’ve just got maintain positive thoughts and get through it.”
South’s two individual winners were Thiede (1,600) and Tori Goethel (high jump).
West Vigo’s Lucas set her meet record by winning the 300 hurdles in 46.24 seconds. Shaelynn White won the 200, and was just .06 seconds shy to place second in the 100.
Northview also had a double-winner in Leeanna Knight (100, long jump). Morgan Holt easily claimed the pole vault (8-0).
