Stout lifts Braves past Patriots

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South senior Marissa Stout has been waiting, patiently, all season for a moment like Wednesday night.

Battling inflammation in her right shoulder, the Braves’ ace pitcher has not relegated to the designated player spot in the lineup for the last month.

Stout got the last four outs to earn the save, while also delivering a two-run double during the Braves’ decisive five-run fifth inning. South moved even with Terre Haute North in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference standings at 4-1, while also getting off to a 1-0 start in the Big Four Tournament.

As the Patriots got a rally going in the top of the sixth behind Katelynn Herrick’s leadoff double and South starter Hanna Gossman’s first walk of the game.

Stout began warming up in the South bullpen.

“With two outs and two on, I knew she wanted the ball,” Braves’ coach Steve Woerner said. “She came to me Monday night. She threw six or eight pitches and told me that it felt OK, that she thought she could do it.”

Stout’s first off-speed pitch hit Marlee Yeagerto load the bases, and North’s Hailee Travioli delivered a two-run single to right field to pull North within a run.

But Stout got the previously 3-for-3 — all were sharp line drives — Jazmine Allen to strike out looking on a pitch on the outside corner.

Stout retired the Patriots in order in the seventh.

“First time out there in about a month. I had a lot of adrenaline. I had the defense behind me, I just threw it in there and let them hit it,” she said.

“She’s not 100 percent, but we needed this win to stay in the hunt in the MIC and the Big Four. This is a big win for us,” said Woerner who was thrilled with the performance of his freshman. Gossman held North to four runs on seven hits, none of which went for extra bases.

“She held Ben Davis to three runs Saturday and we felt like she gave us the best chance of keeping [North] off balance and keeping us in the ball game. We knew we were going to have to hit the ball to win,” Woerner added.

North coach Jack Kirchner sent Hillary Rittenberg to the circle for the crucial game, and the senior was cruising along until the fifth as North built a 3-2 lead after four innings.

“Hillary pitched a good ball game, but that little freshman [Gossman] pitched a good game,” Kirchner said. “She kept us off-balance, we didn’t hit the ball hard off her. She threw a good game, you don’t hit the ball, you don’t win, especially against South.”

Mackenzie McGregor’s bloop single to right-center field helped jumpstart South’s rally, and Shelbie Scamihorn scorched a single to left field, where the ball was misplayed and South added a run. Stout follwed with a line-drive double to the gap in right field, and Cheyenne Reinig and Rebecca Latta kept the rally going with base hits.

Kelsey Marlow made it 7-4 with a single up the middle, but North’s Allen gunned down Latta at the plate to end the inning.

Stout was pumped by the Braves’ big offensive explosion. Coming from behind is something South has done more than a few times this season.

“[Rittenberg] was throwing a lot of high in the zone so we finally started to lay off it and let it get in. The whole team hit it all over the place,” Stout said.
