TERRE HAUTE —
Carmel had a strong back nine to win its second straight Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference boys golf championship on Saturday at Hulman Links.
The Greyhounds shot 320 to edge Center Grove with 324 for their seventh league title in the match played in cool, windy conditions. Carmel trailed Terre Haute North and Center Grove after nine holes but had a 158 on the back nine to claim the decision.
Terre Haute North took third with 334 followed by Terre Haute South with 342, Indianapolis North Central and Lawrence North with 357, Warren Central with 381 and Ben Davis with 387.
Center Grove senior Zach Muench shot 4-over-par 76 to take medalist honors. Andrew Havill of Carmel and Connor Jones of Warren Central each had 77 for second low.
Muench went 38-38 with one birdie in his round. “The greens did not hold the ball . . . it would hit and roll. It was frustrating,” he said.
Muench’s best round this year has been 73 at The Legends of Indiana Course. He intends to play golf at Marian University and study nursing.
Chad Carr is in his fifth year of coaching the Carmel team with three of those teams claiming MIC honors. Carmel’s best score this year has been 309 at Rock Hollow.
“We had two seniors, one junior and two sophomores in our lineup today,” he said.
Andrew Havill, last year’s medalist, led the winners with 77. Brady Sharkey carded 78, Charlie Browning 81 and Jake Brown 84 to round out the scoring.
Browning, Havill and Sharkey all earned all-conference honors with the low eight scores qualifying for All-MIC status.
Muench’s 76 led the Trojans followed by Austin Crowder with 80, Chris Johnson 83 and Christopher Heck with 85. The best scores for the Trojans this year have been 308 and 312.
Sophomore Adam LaGrange and junior Evan Perdiew each shot 81 to lead the Patriots and both went 39-42 in their rounds while Andrew Behnke shot 85 annd Grant Lewellyn 87.
LaGrange and Browning won a playoff with Perdiew to claim the final all-conference medals.
“The greens were soft at the start and the course played pretty long. It was a little windy . . . a tough day for scoring,” said LaGrange.
Perdiew echoed those comments. “If you hit the greens, the ball would stick at the start but the greens were harder on the back nine. I was 1-under through five holes, then had four straight bogeys,” he said.
“We didn’t have our best day . . . but it wasn’t a bad day. We were supposed to finish third and we finished third and had all-conference players. I told the guys to shake it off,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr.
“It was a darn tough day out there. You can tell by the scores.,” he said.
Drew Cahill had 81 to pace South. Jon Payne carded 86 and Luke Peoples and Sam Mimms each had 87.

Goatee, Bertoli ran away with Spring Athlete of the Year
When honoring athletes after a season of excellence, the phrase “what might have been” doesn’t usually come up.

South runs into ‘buzzsaw’ at girls tennis semistate
Postmatch interviews don’t often begin with a coach and a reporter ready to blurt out the same word, but that was the case for Bill Blankenbaker and his interviewer Saturday morning after the Center Grove Semistate for girls high school tennis.
Unfortunately for Blankenbaker’s Terre Haute South team, that word was “buzzsaw.”
Greenwood’s Kawamoto twins made quick work of the top of the Braves’ singles lineup, so despite stellar efforts by both South doubles teams the Woodmen’s 3-2 victory didn’t seem all that close.
Greenwood moves on to Fishers, where it plays Floyd Central or Jasper on Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Also playing Friday, but at Park Tudor, will be South’s Miranda Camp and Nicole Howe, who reached the individual doubles finals for the second straight season by virtue of their 6-4, 6-2 win over the Greenwood team of Taylor Hudnall and Brittany Toney.
“It’s really exciting,” said Howe of the prospect of a second straight finals trip, “but I wish our team could’ve gone with us.”
