South runs into talented North Central team

INDIANAPOLIS — Terre Haute South players and coaches knew when they got off the bus Saturday afternoon that they couldn’t run with the Class 4A No. 3-ranked Indianapolis North Central Panthers.

But they tried anyway.

And after the Braves dug themselves out of a 9-0 hole, it was the Panthers’ size and talent that led to a 78-52 North Central win in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference boys high school basketball.

“If we would play in the half court and move and make good decisions, we can play with anybody. But we have to keep people from trying to do their own thing and just follow more the team mode and it will come back around to them. It’s something we talk about every day,” South coach Scott Ridge said.

South (6-14, 0-7 in MIC) was led by Kevaris Gregory with 14 points and was the Braves’ only double-figure scorer.

Ronnie Johnson, who has signed with Purdue, paced North Central with 21 points, while Patrick Ingram, a 6-foot-3 forward, scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

North Central (17-4, 4-2) scored the first nine points of the game, as both teams raced up and down the court. Defense was not much of a factor.

“We had some good shots and we took them [and missed] and [the Panthers] made us pay. We kind of played their game instead of ours,” Ridge said.

It took nearly three minutes before Gregory hit a 3-pointer to get the Braves on the scoreboard. Then South settled into a more disciplined half-court game, Gregory hit two more 3s, Jeffrey Turner a 2 and the Braves got within two at 13-11.

“The kids showed some heart, got back in it,” Ridge said.

North Central took a 19-16 lead into the second quarter, but South had some momentum. Lucas Steward came off the South bench to score six points in the second period and Danny Etling netted nine points on three of four 3-point shots.

Playing the disciplined, half-court team game, Etling tied the score at 26-26 with 4:51 to play in the half. Steward gave South its first lead, 28-26, at 4:11.

A basket by Jermaine Smith put South up 30-29 with 3:12 remaining in the quarter, but that was South’s last lead.

North Central closed the half with an 8-3 run and led 37-33 at halftime. The Panthers then opened the third quarter with a 15-2 run. The Panthers dominated the boards and ran at will during the 23-5 run.

“Once we got to the second half, their athleticism took over. They kind of wore us down. We made some bad decisions and they made us pay,” Ridge said.

South hit just 3 of 14 shots from the floor in the third quarter, as the Panthers outscored the Braves 22-7. North Central led 78-52 going into the fourth quarter.

South shot just 29 percent (18 of 61) from the floor, compared to North Central’s 50 percent (29 of 58).
