South Vermillion duo of Mumaw, Walsh rekindle passing connection at WVFCA All-Star Game

TERRE HAUTE — Cody Mumaw of South Vermillion pretty much knew what to anticipate when high school teammate Andy Walsh threw him a 34-yard bomb down the left sideline in the third quarter of Saturday night’s annual Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Memorial Stadium.

“We hooked up all year [in 2009],” pointed out Mumaw, who played wide receiver for the victorious North squad in its 40-13 victory Saturday. “It was just good to have teammates in the game with you. I kinda knew what to expect there when Andy threw that ball to me. It was fun.”

“We have a great connection,” admitted Walsh, who will take his quarterbacking skills to Wabash College in the fall. “We throw routes all the time in the offseason. We lift together, throw routes, get our timing down.”

“Doing everything we did in the season, it was pretty easy to connect with him out here tonight.

“I knew exactly when to throw it and where he’d be and how he’d catch it.”

What Mumaw didn’t expect this weekend was winning the Brett Eitel Memorial Scholarship Award for academic performance by a WVFCA all-star in high school. Mumaw, who graduated with a 3.985 grade-point average, received $500 for the scholarship.

“I was surprised,” admitted Mumaw, who will attend Indiana State but not to play football this year. “There are a lot of smart, good athletes out here and I was surprised that out of that group, I was chosen. It was an honor to be chosen for that award.”

“He’s very smart,” added Walsh, who’s no slouch in the classroom himself. “He’s very intelligent. He always had his face in the [school] books. He was always studying. He’s always done a great job in athletics and academics.”

The scholarship was named after the former Marshall, Ill., athlete who lost his life in 2007.

• Another surprise — Also caught off guard over the weekend was WVFCA president and North All-Stars assistant coach Greg Barrett. The North Putnam football coach was inducted into the WVFCA Hall of Fame during a banquet Friday night in Hulman Center.

Also inducted as part of the Class of 2010 were Sullivan athletic director Otto Clements and longtime Wabash Valley football coach Brent Anderson.

“I was very surprised, very honored,” Barrett stressed. “This is our sixth year we’ve done this with the All-Star Game. The Coaches Association has come on really strong. We’re excited about it. I kind of look at [the Hall of Fame recognition] as maybe an administrative award, not as a coaching award. But it’s an honor and I’ll accept that honor.”

Barrett joined his father, the late Jay Barrett, in the WVFCA Hall of Fame.

Other 2010 WVFCA award winners were Darr Boruff (North Putnam) and Derek Dean (South Putnam), the Pete Varda/WVFCA Hall of Fame scholarships ($1,500 apiece), and James Kent (Rockville) and Drew Cash (South Putnam), the Sir Thomas scholarships ($500 apiece).

Scholarship winners were introduced to the crowd between quarters of the game Saturday.
