BRAZIL —
Terre Haute South was a one-shot winner in high school girls golf action Thursday at Forest Park.
Five shots separated the three teams in the match played in ideal conditions. The Braves shot 174 to nip the host Northview team with 175; Terre Haute North carded 179.
Earlier in the week, North edged the Knights 180-181 on the same course.
Senior Alexandra Pickens paced the 4-0 South team with a career-best even-par 36 to take medalist honors. She had two birdies in her round.
Freshman Ali Danielson was second low for the winners with 43.
Senior Nicole Anderson led North with 39 for second-low score, one shot better than she had against the Knights in the other match this week. Anna Potter had 44 and had the shot of the day to score an eagle on No. 9.
Keirsten Mikesell led the host team with 41 and Sierra Girton shot 42.
South coach Cara Stuckey was pleased with the consistency of her team with six scores under 50. “Our goal is to be under 45,” she added. “I am proud of Alex and the time she has put in to improve so much since she was a freshman.”
Northview coach Bob Treash was pleased with his team’s score. “We were six shots better and our putting was not good. We will work on that,” he said.
“We are doing better than I expected. I’m happy with them,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr.
Northview will be back in action Saturday, competing for Western Indiana Conference honors at Idle Creek. The Knights, Edgewood and Owen Valley figure to contend for top finishes.
North and South both have home matches on Monday and will vie for county honors next Thursday at Rea Park.
All three teams were in action Monday when rain and lightning halted play for the teams.

When honoring athletes after a season of excellence, the phrase “what might have been” doesn’t usually come up.

South runs into ‘buzzsaw’ at girls tennis semistate
Postmatch interviews don’t often begin with a coach and a reporter ready to blurt out the same word, but that was the case for Bill Blankenbaker and his interviewer Saturday morning after the Center Grove Semistate for girls high school tennis.
Unfortunately for Blankenbaker’s Terre Haute South team, that word was “buzzsaw.”
Greenwood’s Kawamoto twins made quick work of the top of the Braves’ singles lineup, so despite stellar efforts by both South doubles teams the Woodmen’s 3-2 victory didn’t seem all that close.
Greenwood moves on to Fishers, where it plays Floyd Central or Jasper on Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Also playing Friday, but at Park Tudor, will be South’s Miranda Camp and Nicole Howe, who reached the individual doubles finals for the second straight season by virtue of their 6-4, 6-2 win over the Greenwood team of Taylor Hudnall and Brittany Toney.
“It’s really exciting,” said Howe of the prospect of a second straight finals trip, “but I wish our team could’ve gone with us.”
