CLAY CITY —
The Clay City Eels started the homecoming party Saturday night with a free throw contest that led to a 40-33 victory over the visiting White River Valley Wolverines.
Leading from the 3:21 mark of the first quarter to the final buzzer, Clay City hit 6 of 11 free throws over the final 1:11 to crown homecoming queen Brielle Drelick with a victory.
“This is a big win for us. We’ve struggled and we played better last night [in a one-point loss to North Daviess], but I hope we’re back on track and playing like we were before Christmas,” Clay City coach Vance Edmondson said.
Clay City was led by Blake Cesinger with 16 points and three steals. While Cesinger was the only Eel in double figures, Tyler Allen, Brylan Jones, Jake Tiefel and Ben Denker all scored six points.
White River Valley, coming off an overtime victory over Class A No. 2-ranked Loogootee on Friday, was led by Cade Hill with 14 points.
Clay City took care of the basketball, committing just nine turnovers for the game, and played a physical man-to-man defense from start to finish. Four the of the Eels’ nine turnovers came in the fourth quarter against the Wolverines trapping defense.
“We tried to make sure that we took care [of the basketball] and we hit some free throws [in the fourth quarter],” Edmondson said.
Luke Mowery gave WRV a 7-4 lead at 5:25 in the opening quarter on an inside basket. Then the Eels held the Wolverines scoreless for the next 6 minutes and 10 seconds.
Cesinger hit a turning jump shot, then stole the ball and Allen converted the theft into a 3-pointer that put the Eels ahead 9-7. Cesinger’s 3 gave Clay City a 12-7 lead going into the second period.
The Eels led by six and seven points through the second period and 26-20 at halftime. WRV couldn’t get closer than four points in the third quarter and Clay City led 26-20 going into the final eight minutes of play.
Clay City hit 12 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off White River Valley.
