Corenflos gets West Vigo back in win column

ELLETTSVILLE — Jordan Houser and Cody Thornton are vital to the success of the West Vigo boys basketball team, but for the Vikings to break their four-game losing streak, they needed production from someone else too.

Enter Adrien Corenflos.

The junior played one of his most consistent games of the season as he scored a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds as West Vigo broke its skid with a 56-46 Western Indiana Conference victory over Edgewood.

“We've been struggling the last few weeks, but Adrien's been a silver lining for us. Not just tonight, but for the last three or four games. He's contributing more and more everytime he steps on the floor. He got some rebounds when we had to have them,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said.

Corenflos led a balanced effort for the Vikings. Houser scored 12, Kyle Stewart had 11 and Thornton had 10, but Corenflos scored six of his points in the decisive final quarter and was a rebounding obstacle the Mustangs couldn't solve.

“It feels great to get over the losing streak. It's demoralizing to lose four in a row, but we got after it in practice this week and this is how it turned out,” Corenflos said.

Injury-plagued Edgewood (3-10, 1-4) was missing Brandon Owens and Jared Horne. The Mustangs came out in a 2-3 zone, and despite West Vigo's shooting prowess, the zone seemed to throw the Vikings off. Edgewood had the measure of the first quarter and played with more gusto as it took a 10-7 lead at the first quarter break.

“I've seen them play three or four times and not seen them play any zone whatsoever. I think our kids understand how to react to it, we just missed some shots early,” Boehler said.

That changed quickly in the second quarter thanks primarily to West Vigo's reserves.

The Vikings are used to Stewart coming off the bench to give a lift and he did with an early steal and 3-pointer. Jimmy Maples also raised the intensity from the bench with a good rotation and he had two steals and a bucket shortly after entering the game.

“I wanted to use Jimmy just to give our guys a breather. But he got two steals and a layup right off the bat. He was kind of our pick-up guy tonight. It was nice to see someone who doesn't always get to make a contribution give us a lift,” Boehler said.

West Vigo used the infusion of bench intensity to go on an 11-0 run to take an 18-13 lead. Edgewood, however, was having none of it, and the Mustangs responded with a 9-0 run of their won to take a 22-18 lead. The lead seesawed for the remainder of the half. West Vigo took a 28-27 halftime lead on a Cody Thornton 3-pointer with 3 seconds left in the half.

West Vigo took the lead for good with a 9-2 run midway through the third quarter. Thornton drained a 3-pointer and a layup during the run which put the Vikings in front 40-33.

West Vigo could never quite pull away from the Mustangs, despite chronic shooting woes for the hosts. Edgewood shot 5 of 20 in the second half, yet West Vigo needed all of Corenflos' six points to maintain a 46-40 lead at the 3:34 mark.

Edgewood got within four with 2:17, but West Vigo – which missed its first five free throw attempts of the game – made its final eight to keep Edgewood from gaining a foothold. The defense on Edgewood's shooters was also emphatic.

“We look back at the games we lost. Our shots were going, but our defense had changed. We let teams have what they wanted. We took it back to the level we want it to be tonight,” Corenflos said.

West Vigo (10-8, 4-1) next plays host to Evansville North tonight.
