Marshall, Flora win Little Illini Conference tourney titles

BRIDGEPORT, Ill. — Marshall and Flora were winners in Little Illini Conference basketball championship games played Friday at Red Hill High School.

Flora defeated Marshall 65-51 in the boys game, winning its second straight title after the Lions had won four in a row. The No. 7-ranked Class 2A team is 23-2 for the year and defeated Marshall for the second time this season.

Marshall defeated Lawrenceville 59-22 to win its first girls championship since winning back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003. The Lions, ranked No. 14 in the Class 2A poll, are 22-1 for the season with one week left in the regular season.

In the girls game, Lawrenceville scored the first three points but Marshall had the next 17 in leading 11-3 at the first stop and 30-12 at halftime. Marshall outscored its three opponents in the tournament 170-61.

Kaydie Grooms led a balanced attack with 19 points and she had five rebounds. Ariana Kuhn had 14 points and Erika Kuhn had 11 points and seven assists while Alexis Thompson had nine points, seven boards, five steals and five blocks.

In the boys game, Flora led 17-10 at the first stop and  Marshall came back to trail 24-22 at the half. The Lions tied the count to start the third canto but trailed 44-36 going into the final eight minutes and got no closer than six points in the final period.

Logan Cannady led the 15-6 Lions with 13 points, getting 10 in the first half. Thomas Sisson tallied 11 and Jacob Duncan was limited to seven free throws.

Paul Knapp scored the first 11 points for the Wolves and finished with 24 points. Nick Painter had 15 points and six blocks.

Next — Marshall girls (22-1) will be at Hutsonville-Palestine on Monday. Marshall boys (15-6) will be at Oblong on Tuesday.

n Tigers win — Hutsonville-Palestine defeated Casey 69-61 on Thursday to take third place in the tournament.

Ethan Blankenship had 16 points and Brandon Wolfe scored 15 for the Warriors.

Casey (10-7) will be at home against Newton on Monday in a makeup game.
