TERRE HAUTE —
Some of their incentive could have been sapped a couple of nights earlier, when Center Grove achieved an eight-inning victory over Warren Central to clinch the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference high school baseball championship.
So Terre Haute North’s Patriots were playing their final regular-season doubleheader against visiting Indianapolis North Central just for fun — and to honor seven seniors — on Saturday, and they had more fun later in the day. After losing a sloppy 8-6 decision, North won the second game 8-3 and coach Shawn Turner was taking the positive approach.
“This has been a fun group, we’ve won more games than we’ve lost, and we’re capable of playing with anybody when we’re good,” the Patriot coach said.
North was good in a variety of ways in Saturday’s second game: playing errorless baseball, taking the lead to stay in an inning that featured textbook execution and stringing hits together for a five-run rally that clinched the outcome. Pitchers Austin Hicks and Chris Gonzales scattered eight hits and walked just one batter.
The Patriots went ahead without a hit in the second inning when Colton Pittman walked, took second on a wild pitch, was moved to third when Scottie Finzel grounded to the right side and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hicks. Catcher Luke Schoffstall ended each of the first two Panther innings by throwing out runners attempting to steal.
Two more runs scored in the top of the third on a walk to Zach Milam, an infield hit by Nick Long, a pickoff error and a run-scoring double by Tony Rosselli, but in the bottom of the inning North Central opened the inning with three straight hits and had runners at first and third with no outs. Then North got a break.
North Central’s Andrew Riley smoked a wicked line drive up the middle that hit Hicks’ foot. Instead of being another hit, the ball went to shortstop Cody Gardner who stepped on second and fired to first for a double play. Although Hicks — who had been checked for a different physical problem one pitch earlier — was writhing on the ground for a moment, he was able to stay in the game.
His teammates gave him some cushion in the top of the fifth. After one out, Long got his third hit of the game and Gardner wrapped up a five-hit day with a double. Rosselli was walked intentionally to set up a double play, but that strategy was foiled by RBI singles by Sam Wolf and Finzel, a wild pitch and a failed pickoff that brought in runs and a fielder’s choice for an RBI by Hicks. Gonzales relieved Hicks with two on and out out in the bottom of the inning and allowed just one run the rest of the way.
Saturday morning’s opener was not quite so pristine — for either team.
North Central contributed three errors and a balk in the first two innings to help the Patriots to a quick 3-0 lead, Rosselli driving in a run with a sacrifice fly and Milam getting a leadoff single in the first and an RBI double in the second.
The Panthers got four runs and four hits and North starter Adler Ingalsbe had four strikeouts in the top of the third, however, the missed third strike helping the Panther rally that included RBI doubles by Mac Lozer and Roman Baisa.
The visitors then got generous again, helping North regain the lead in a two-run fourth inning that started with two walks and a pickoff error and continued with run-scoring hits by Milam and Long. But this was where the Patriot offense started to let down, as runners on second and third with one out were left there.
The same situation arose when North had a chance to pad its lead in the bottom of the fifth after an error, a walk and a sacrifice. That rally snuffed itself out when one of the Patriot runners wandered off base and was picked off.
Those missed opportunities loomed large when the Panthers got three runs in the top of the sixth. An error, a hit batsman and a sacrifice started the rally; Riley’s single tied the score 5-5; and after Lozer missed a squeeze bunt — and the Patriots were unable to record the gift out when third base was uncovered — Lozer then blasted a two-run double.
North got one run back in the bottom of the inning on Gardner’s ground-rule double, but the ball bouncing over the center-field fence kept the tying run from being able to score and — for the third straight inning — the Patriots got nothing more from a second-and-third, one-out situation. A bunt single and two more North errors allowed North Central to get its final run in the top of the seventh.
“We had some bonehead plays kind of get in the way [in the first game],” Turner said later. “That’s kind of a microcosm of all season long; we do that and we also have moments when we look like we know what we are doing.”
All seven seniors honored between games — Finzel, Gonzales, Ingalsbe, Landry Kaufman, Nickohli Kimmel and four-year starters Gardner and Rosselli — played major roles in their final home appearance, with Finzel catching the final two innings. It was the first appearance in the field all season for Finzel, who suffered a shoulder injury during football season.
“It was a good two innings,” he said with a smile afterward. “It was fun to get back out there.
“There are no words to describe [the last appearance at Don Jennings Field],” Finzel added. “It was a fun four years, we learned a lot and I had some great times with my friends.
“We got some little rough patches, but I think we’re ready to go for tourney time,” he concluded. “We’re playing for each other right now and we’re playing for coach Turner.”
